What model of a Macbook should I purchase?

I was going through the list of refurbished Macs and saw these two :

Firstly, would the year on the models really matter? What would you guys say about these two? Also, I understand that I cannot add my Employee / Student discount to these Macs. Should I get the AppleCare Package and if so, would I be able to add the discount.

I see no reason to get the 2012 over the early 2013, unless you seriously can't afford to pay an extra $60 bucks.

Expandable Memory

In the 2012 model above, I believe that those models had expandable RAM. Would it be having that, coz then I could increase memory to 16GB.
