Small update for you guys, the LG 27UD88-W does not feed enough power to be able to charge the 2016 MBP 15" at all. :(

thats correct. wasn't sure if it would be trickle charge but the monitor definitely doesn't have the 86W necessary, but I didn't think it wouldn't charge it at all.

oh oh.... so if i was to go 2 of the 4K 27s, i would need the external power plugged in until there are good enough affordable docks...

dam was thinking a USB dock as well until there is a good dock... glad i went for the 15 over the 13 for the 4 ports....

Your right. I own this monitor and it barely can even charge it at 1% per hour.... Horrifying, probably bad for the battery too. You should definitely charge with Apple's provided charger.

The LG 27" 4K looks tempting as it has a good range of ports, nice resolution and is nearly half the price of the 5K UltraFine one.

the 13 with touchbar also has 4 ports. its the 13 base that only has 2 ports.

Leaning towards 2 x LG 5k Ultrafine's for the least amount of wires and being able to charge 15' MBP w/ TB. I wish they had a 38 Curved with TB3 that can charge the new MBP as well, that'd be easier. Still have to wait until December to even order, laptop is due in a week-ish.

Excuse the ignorance but would that slow anything down/cause glitches? I was originally going to get a 5k iMac to replace my 2013 27" iMac and a 15" MBP. But now I'm thinking of making the new MBP my main machine due to not waiting to use a £3k (!) bit of kit around not doing much. I didn't use my Air much but probably because the screen wasn't up to snuff. So keep going backwards and forwards on the whole monitor thing. The 38" curved screen looks mega tempting but there's a certain safety in getting the Apple approved 5K (making that my iMac replacement). Two sounds amazing ;-)

No problem, which task are you asking about that would potentially be slowed down?

If you are asking about using external monitors in general with MBP, there hasn't been an issue I've come across. I currently have a 2015 MBP and 2 Apple displays (1 27" LED Display and 1 24" Cinema Display) and I'm not having any speed or latency issues.

I guess I was wondering if any of the CC (in particular Photoshop/InDesign/Illustrator) apps slow down when having to pull on the video card to drive two monitors. I've never done anything that pixel intensive before, if you know what I mean. I've only been using iMacs and MacPros (and equivalent) going back a long time and last time I had a more remote way of working it was a 12"PB and a smallish CRT monitor!

Thanks for your help btw! Your answer is quite reassuring.

Sorry, I don't really do anything pixel intensive, mostly Adobe Acrobat Pro and industry specific data entry.

I've gone ahead and ordered a 27UD88-W as I can't justify nearly twice the price (£500 v £900) for the new LG 5K screen given what I'll be using it for. There's been a bit of a stock shortage in the UK but they should be available next week again.

Spec wise it looks good and has the hub plus USB-C connectivity, so looks like a good compromise.

BTW, Apple has an open ticket regarding the charging issue which they are looking at. I received a call from them the other evening to try a few other things and try a new cable (which they are sending me free of charge.). Their support guy did agree that even though the monitor is not feeding 87W of power to the MBP that is should be trickle charging at least.

interesting....

2 of them is still favourite for me....

Overall I'm pretty happy with mine. Another oddity is the 2 USB A ports in the back can be either configured to run data and some charging or not data and supercharging. I think the regular charging is similar amperage to plugging your iPhone into a 2015 MBP for instance. On the resolution scaling, I'm currently scaled at one smaller than "Larger Text" Any smaller is starting to be a bit of a strain to me.

I was in exactly the same boat deciding on a monitor for my 2016 MBP (coming from a 2013 13" MBP and 2012 27" iMac) and have settled on the 38UC99 to accompany it, the screen real estate is so important to me, that took precedent over everything else.

Can't wait for them both to arrive!

Have you gotten both yet? How is the setup so far?

The LG specs say it will charge something of up to 60W, but they do think it should be charging a 15" MBP to a degree - like you say, it should be better than you're experiencing!

Received and setup the Lenovo ThinkVision X1. It charges my 15", one cable, drives 4k/60. Only tradeoff is when using that resolution is that the USB on the monitor drop down to USB 2.0. So far accomplishes what I was looking for.

I forgot to update this thread. With a new USB C cable from Monoprice, charging is working in addition to the display and USB ports.

Nice one! I just need to find one of those cables in the UK now!

Super interested in this monitor over the LG for the aesthetic alone. How do you like it? Build quality is good? Any impressions, I only ask because I can't seem to find any reviews at all online.

Also, are the speakers attached or removable?

I got mine last night. I think the build quality is good, surprisingly thin and easy to carry if you don't grab the camera which moves.

I'm not a fan of stand it was a pain to screw in the base and it feels not level but could be my desk.

Speakers are also integrated and work well out of the box. No volume controls from the Mac but the monitor has them on the side.
