Absolutely no more bells and whistles!!

That was the mistake with Windows... Win 3.1 was good.. as was WinWord 2.0 and Excel 4.0 etc.. but then Win95 came and forced us all to have more memory and bigger hard drives. I still keep my old classic MAC going because it does all I want plus I 'like it'!! My modern Intel MAC is really just to make my office docs compatible with the people at work.

My PC came pre-installed with Vista.. a computer experience equivalent of having a chocolate eclair covered in treacle, butter, white sugar and more chocolate.. totally unnecessary and sick-making.

Slim OS X down.. make it Intel-only and make it more stable and faster

OK while yes bells and whistles are annoying I use compiz fusion which is much more eye-candy than windows vista aero and it uses much much less system resources.

Aero doesn't seem to use much in the way of resources.
At least, not in any obvious way.

Isn't most of it offloaded to the GPU (which is probably

1) That would probably be the biggest development in the history of Apple. Aside from the cost complaints (which are from people who apparently love crappy HPs) the Mac would have no real weakness, except...

2) Would such a move open Mac OS up to extreme vulnerabilities? You have to add virus protection in Boot Camp (and I assume using Parallels or VMware). I don't think Apple would do this if it compromised OS X. Plus I think more stuff will move toward the Internet (take a look at Google Docs, Quicken Online). Probably wouldn't be worth the hassle.

I would hope that Apple only implement this if it could keep the OS relatively secure. As, Macs gain larger marketshare it becomes a bigger target for malicious code, since it would be such an "accomplishment" to break a system that is touted as being secure, whether it exploits a OS X or Windows vulnerability.

I agree that eventually Internet based apps will become more prevalent, but how quickly that will be I'm not sure. Having the security and infrastructure to handle those apps and all those users will need to be addressed, too.

Well if you use AIGLX instead of XGL then there is a possiblity that most of it is indirect rendering (like most people) so no its not all on the GPU.

The thing is vista runs allot of background tasks that do nothing but simply live protect its inherit XP weaknesses (remember that VISTA is an extension of XP not a revision).

In short I just don't see bells and wistles as what slows an OS as most modern version of linux I have used have many more features than OS:X and still don't need as much resources as Windows does (which has less features than both operating systems).

It's not the number of processes, but what they're doing that counts.
If they're doing nothing, it's not a problem. Here's the task manager
at the moment:

47 processes running - that's quite a few, but not dissimilar to what
I have running under Leopard under similar circumstances. Most of
those aren't doing anything at any given time either.

Just for the sake of argument, btw. I love a good argument 🙂
