I use mine as a laptop, not a netbook lol. My iPhone is my netbook. But if I were to buy an actual netbook, it would most likely be the HP mini. I really like the style of it

Yeah me too.

Before the iPhone I used to have maps preloaded on my MBP/ PB and it's used as a dumb gps substitute in the car.

Netbooks are too slow for me....

Maybe the potential tablet will serve that purpose in the future in the line up.

Dell mini9

I use my Hackintoshed Dell Mini9 as my netbook. Hackintoshing is not nearly as difficult on the Mini9 as you may think. Check out the forums at www.mydellmini.com to see for yourself. I think there are still some small issues with hacking the Mini10 but I'm not entirely sure. I don't have one so I don't follow it too closely. As for the Mini9, I have 10.5.8 installed and working flawlessly. The only thing I don't have, but I think has been done (I just haven't done it) is 2 finger scrolling.

If you're dead set against hacking OSX onto a machine, what about a PowerBook G4 12"? I have one and I love it. Great size.

Good luck,
m&c

My first post. Go easy on me! :)

Welcome to Macrumors.

There has been a ton of posts on both netbooks to run OS X and just having a netbook with Windows as a second computer.

The names that come up are:

Gateway
Acer
Lenovo
MSI Wind
Dell

There are many fans of each on this website. I don't have one but I am a little partial to either Acer or Lenovo. Some older folk who are not used to laptops in general, and maybe not even to computers, usually just don't get it with netbooks. But if you grew up with the common appearance of laptops at work and at school, netbooks are just small laptops which can do a lot if you are well experienced with laptops.

It takes a little time to get used to typing on them without flubbing up the kesy thouhg. :)

Apple netbook users buy the Macbook Air.

He he, don't call the Macbook Air a netbook in an Apple store. :)

I made that mistake. I am pretty well versed on computers and what and what they cannot do, or so I thought. The Apple salesman/genius proceeded to show me some of the most memory hogging games on the market that they had loaded up on the MBA and the laptop did very well. It even kills some desktops I have seen just a couple of years old.

IMHO, the Macbook Air is not a netbook, but a full featured computer that can kick the but of many a PC laptop. And touching the thing for quite a long time, and many vistis later, the MBA never really got "hot". My iBook gets hot by comparison and my PC laptop could heat the house. ;)

If you ever have a chance to try one out, I suggest you do and give the MBA a chance to see what it can do. It is not a netbook just like the Indianapolis Colts are not a pee wee football team.

I bought a Lenovo S10. I tried both Windows 7 and OS X on the S10 and both were fine, I just couldn't get used to the tiny keyboard and screen size for around the house portable use. My partner uses it for school now.

I bought and returned an HP 2140 netbook. While it was more comfortable to use and had a better screen resolution, I prefer working in OS X, and my attempts to get Leopard working well enough on it to use, were unsuccessful.

I eventually gave in an got myself the high-end MBA and have coupled it with a cinema display for an all-in-one solution for both work and home. If I were stuck with a netbook budget and had to do it all over again, I'd probably go for an 11" HP model and live with Windows 7. I am excited to see what Apple comes up with in this price-range.

I wish Apple could come up with a $250 or $300 (street price discounted at a place in Silicon Valley like Fry's) netbook like the PC companies out there, but if they do, my guess is that Apple's netbook, which is a likely future product, will be more in the $399 dollar range to $499 dollars, but well worth it.

When the rumors of a smaller iPod type device (MP3 player from Apple with the "iPod" designation) coming out for under $200 dollars was rumored, I thought it was crazy talk. Then my parents bought such a device, the iPod Nano. So maybe Apple can make a netbook in a similar price range to the PC side netbooks. Only time will tell.

I don't want to be harsh but the hardware specs of the Macbook air kind of contradict what you are saying... Even more so if you have a first gen one with ****** Intel graphics...

Use a MSI Wind with SL 10.6.2, good community to support it too.

Thanks,

That pic was taken just out of the box and hacked. The WinblozeXP sticker has been removed. The front now looks like this!

I really like how you are running macosx on the mini10 but you still have the windowsxp sticker on it... classy

I like the MBAs I have tried. If you don't like yours, if you have one, send it to me. ;)

What is wrong with the hardware specs of a MBA? Core 2 Duo, GeForce 9400M graphics, 2 gigs of RAM, 1066 Mhz frontside bus? ( www.apple.com/store )

It kicks the butt of any PC netbook unless there is some PC netbook with amazing specs that has just come out recently. How would an MSI fare against an MBA? The MSI is a netbook and appropriately priced as such (and probably a great machine), but the MBA is a full sized laptop with a surprisingly visible screen and comfortable keyboard. While no laptop is the same as a desktop with giant screen and keyboard and mouse, the MBA isn't all that bad. One could use it as their main machine.

The MBA is a full fledged computer in my book for those reasons (stats) and many more. And the only thing I would want is a 300-500 gig hard drive but I could live with an external HD along with an MBA.

12" PowerBook

I use the last revision 12" PowerBook 1.5Ghz Superdrive with a 250GB HDD and maxed ram. Aside from the lame NVIDA GPU, this is the best laptop apple have made. Its small enough to travel lightly and full featured set of ports.

17" MBP is a man's "netbook."
I carry my MBP around about every day. If you are going to carry a bag for netbook anyway, there is no point to having a netbook except for budget constraints, as netbooks are pretty much laptops with power of 3, 4 year old computers.

^^^
Me too

The HP mini is awful for one main reason: TRACKPAD Its about 2 1/2 inches wide and an inch long. Also if your looking to buy a netbook wait until the apple event near the end of the month. There is rumor there will be a flood of new netbooks after it. And hey, maybe youll like the tablet?

Also I would have to say the macbook air is a waste of money. the MBP is maybe a pound or 2 heavier and a 1/3 of an inch thicker. Plus it has a DVD drive so you dont have to spend hours in handbrake to prepare for a vacation.

I have a MacPro and a MBP 13". But I have ended using my MBP 13" all the time now. I enjoy the intimacy of the laptop.

But I am planning on going "into the field" for my dissertation and I'd prefer not to be carrying my $2000 investment (with my life's work) to humid, seaside areas where I'll also have to be minding video and audio equipment from possible thieves.

Since I am going to be using a computer primarily for notetaking I'm seriously considering the following alternatives:

1) A Netbook (have looked at Toshiba, Samsung or HP because of their fuller keyboards)

2) Apple Ipod Touch

3) Or go old-school with a pen/journal book or index cards.

Samsung and Toshiba are the worst netbooks apart from Dell POS. Lenovo is my first choice, but for pure performance HP Mini w/ the HD video enhancer card is the way to go. Lenovo currently has the best quality and okay pricing. It's also the best designed.

Welcome to Macrumors.

Thank you!!

It's just not going to happen at those price levels - that just isn't Apple's target. Granted it's a pointless discussion because they aren't planning a release in the segment but I think you should revise that up to $/€/£ 700-900 if not higher.
My guess is that they would probably be able to pass it off as a premium product at a higher entry point than the MacBook and maybe even the bottom range MBP. Yes, I realise that space is currently occupied by the bottom range MBA. For it's tech specs, the only thing that would indeed make me buy that lower end machine would be if it were to have smaller dimensions.

The front now looks like this!

Hats off - sweet touch!

I use the last revision 12" PowerBook 1.5Ghz Superdrive with a 250GB HDD and maxed ram.

A truly beautiful machine. Fantastic in every sense, such a shame they didn't take this direction any further.

Dell Mini 10v here too, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD, Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Not used as often now since I got the MacBook Pro, but still a useful little machine.

its true , i had a hp mini 1110 ,for just 2 weeks i sold it and bought a used mb air revA

10 reasons to buy a macbook air inset of netbook

1- 13" vs 10" you will note when browsing some of the webpages doesnt fit in a 10" screen, a real pain in the ass for some.

True, but most pages will fit on perfectly.

2- air has much better performance

You're paying x3 as much as you are for a netbook...it should be extremely better...

3- bought weight almost the same
4- you have an original mac
5- air has no issues with future snow updates
it's an apple product...
6- air is not made with cheap material
7- future resell value of the air
8- price diference between a used macbook air revA VS netbook is less than $200.
9- better grafic cards on the air
10- backlit keyboard with larger trackpad

i advice everyone to buy a used macbook air insted of a netbook.

If you have a grand and a half to blow off...go for it :D
Otherwise, I don't see a harm in investing 1/3 of the price you would spend on a MBA on a decent netbook.

I was going to purchase the MSI Wind for the longest time, I then got the deal of $700 for my MacBook Air so I got the Air instead.

I have an EEE PC 1000HE. The biggest thing that sold me on this was the battery: up to 9.5 hours. I use the netbook for casual surfing when I'm travelling, visiting friends, weekend trips, etc. I can bring it with me for a weekend without even bothering to pack the charger.

However, it's a bit pokey. OK for basic web surfing and email.

I'd be all for the MacBook Air -- if only it could have twice the battery life that it does.

Got a Nokia Booklet 3G; kick ass computer with a terrific battery life; runs Windows 7 Professional.

If we're talking strictly about computers that run OS X, closest I have is the Air.

This Nokia is the nicest looking netbook I've seen for sure. I messed with it a few days ago at a Best Buy but for $600 bucks figured I'd wait to see what the tablet ends up as.

Figure out how to put OSX on that Nokia and let me know :) That would be exactly what my wife has been asking for. Netbook size computer running OSX!
