Because some of us don't just use an OS solely on looks alone.

You're right. It was kind of a stupid question on my part, I must admit.

People aren't allowed to like certain aspects of Windows 8, some of which they would like to see brought over to OS X?

Of course they are allowed to do so. I guess my reaction comes down to the fact that I personally find the Metro interface in Windows 8 borderline unusable and would to a certain extent ascribe that to its flat look which makes it hard to differentiate between content layers and (clickable) UI. I would hate to see OS X go into that direction when I've already been (somewhat) disappointed by the recent developments in iOS. To quote Jakob Nielsen:

Flat design and improperly rescaled design are the main threats to tablet usability [...] Why not allow users to easily see what they can do? We need a golden middle ground between skeuomorphism and a dearth of distinguishing signifiers for UI elements.

EDIT:
The flat design threat is a fashionable trend that will hopefully subside before it hurts users (and companies) too much.

In the end iOS 7 has very little in common with Windows Phone 8. I don't see why it should be any different with OS X. On top of that iOS 7 is a first iteration of a new interface design under Ive. I'm sure many improvements and tweaks will be made along the way based on gained experience and consumer feedback. The exact same thing happened with Aqua after all...

No need to panic.

Not a Mavericks app, but Logic Pro X, that's where I think OS X is going, the icons aren't necessarily "flat" but they've massively simplified them and they have less "real" looking elements. And the whole UI is more matte looking, with simpler colours and square-er(?) buttons.

Also, the new Apple logo on the login screen of Mavericks, they may possibly change everything to be embossed rater than impressed, as the previous logo was.

Let's just throw ALL UI Design guidelines OUT THE WINDOW!

While we're all at it, Let's just throw up ads that are all primary coloured text on white backgrounds!

THIS IS THE FUTURE!

Look out Graphics Designers, your jobs are going to become scarce when anyone can throw out a god awful mess that becomes the new norm.

A little overboard, but still approximate to how I feel about all of this nonsense in iOS 7 Design aesthetics, if you can call it that. :)

iCloud beta certainly seems give an idea of what a desktop version of iOS 7 could look like:

Count me in as one who's actually liking some of these new recent mockups of an iOS7 styled OS X. I like the new finder icon and dock that Edgar Rios designed. Trippy Finder face :D Nice dock too IMO.

Anyway, I find this thread interesting and enjoyable so let's keep this going :)
I love the menu bar here. The dock is jarring, but would grow on me I'm sure. I'm not sure I need all the icons to be as bright and vibrant as they are in iOS.

I don't understand why everything is fullscreen in that mockup(You didn't post all the pictures, but some show a full screen siri and spotlight). Notification center is fine being the side of the screen.

That I like a lot though.

Yeah I agree that the icloud update is a sign of things to come.

I like that NC! Very nice!

I think if OS X gets the new UI, with space to breathe on the desktop, it's going to look really good.

I actually like those new icons posted for the dock and even the NC

However in some of the mockups there is just too much white and I absolutely hate the way the Helvetica font looks on the menu bar and I don't like the flat look on all the images/icons.

Wow no offense but the Safari browser looks like something a 5 year old would use, it looks more like a toy than a web browser.

I would personally love a flat UI for the next release of OSX. It's the right step to take, all these gradients and super exaggerated drop shadows etc just don't look right in these times.

I've also like many other Web Designers have adopted flat UI in my work, simpler is almost always better, but It's also a lot harder to get right. But If anybody can do it right it's probably Apple..

The drop shadows need to stay. They help you ID the front window a lot more easily. This, of course, isn't an issue on iOS.

Perhaps they could be subdued a bit--they exaggerated them a lot starting in Leopard.

I don't think it'll be such a drastic change like some of the concept's we are seeing. I'm guessing It'll be very gradual if anything..

I personally would not be happy If OSX became iOS..

This is NOT improvement at all.

I don't want to work with THIS all day! I'm already being ANGRY as I'm typing.
