Has it occured to you that maybe folding phones do not represent the future of smartphone design? It wouldn't be the first time that Apple has resisted jumping on what many thought would be the next popular bandwagon, only to see said craze subsequently fizzle and die out.

Case in point - folding phones vs Vision Pro. I don't see it as Apple no longer innovating, and more that they are deciding to focus on an area which they feel shows more promise and potential (AR headsets) over an area that doesn't (flexible screens).
Foldables is NOT the way to go. Thankfully, Apple knows that. They suck.

I will be upgrading A LOT this next year. It seems like ALL my Apple products decided to “die” at the same time. First, I Definitely will be upgrading to the iPhone Pro Max 15 since my beloved iPhone 11 Pro Max recently died a horrible death(shattered back & front glass plus internal damage). I use the iPhone as my main camera now, so am really looking forward to the new camera features. But I also have to upgrade my Apple Watch 6. I’ve used it everyday the last two years to track my health stats & bike rides Without an issue… but just yesterday the screen went dead. Lastly, my two iPads which I use for my artwork are also showing signs of trouble. This morning my 2018 iPad 11 Pro started acting weird & the screen froze. Luckily I was able to do a force restart. It has served me well professionally the last five years, I only hope it makes it until next Summer when the OLED iPad Pros finally arrive. Lastly my iPad mini 5 which I use as a digital sketchbook when I want to travel light is starting to have battery issues. Looking forward to upgrading to the flat edged design, apple pencil 2 support, usb-c & better screen of the next ipad mini 7. My wallet just hurts thinking about how much all this is gonna cost, but I tend to keep Apple products for a long time and don’t upgrade every year.

Apple's annual fall event takes place on Tuesday, September 12, when it is expected to unveil the new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro lineup, an Apple Watch Series 9, and a second-generation Apple Watch Ultra. It may also make some additional new products available, but there are a handful of rumored upcoming devices that we don't expect to make an appearance this month.

To help set expectations ahead of Apple's "Wonderlust" event, we've compiled a list of products that Apple is unlikely to announce in September, but rather later on in the year or in 2024 and beyond.

M3-Powered Macs

Apple is developing new Macs powered by the company's next-generation M3 chip, which is built on chipmaking partner TSMC's 3nm process, resulting in significant performance and power efficiency improvements over the 5nm-based M2 chip that Apple's most recent Mac models are based on.

The first of Apple's new M3-powered Macs are expected to arrive later in the year. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman's sources, an October event will follow Apple's iPhone 15 series announcement in September, and the state of Apple's current product lineup suggests it will focus on new Macs with M3 chips.

Given that Apple launched new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models in January, and more recently new 15-inch MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro models in June, Gurman believes the first beneficiaries of the new M3 chip will be the next 24-inch iMac, 13-inch MacBook Air, and 13-inch MacBook Pro.

Looking further ahead, new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M3 chips are expected to arrive in early 2024, featuring M3 Pro and M3 Max chips, according to Gurman. Apple is also believed to be actively testing an M3 version of the Mac mini, although it is not expected to arrive until sometime next year.

New iPads

Apple is expected to release new M3-powered iPad Pro models with OLED displays and a redesigned Magic Keyboard accessory, but these devices are not expected to debut until the spring or early summer of 2024.

iPad-mini-AND-Air-Feature.jpg

As for the iPad mini, which was last updated in September 2021, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in January said the next model would likely enter mass production in the first quarter of 2024. At the time, he also said there may be no new iPad releases in the following 9-12 months.

According to Gurman, Apple is developing a new iPad Air with improved specs, but he has offered no timeline indicating when it will be released. Apple last updated the iPad Air in March 2022.

The best chance of seeing a new tablet from Apple this year could come in the form of an 11th-generation entry-level iPad. The 10th-generation iPad was released in October 2022, and Apple has updated the entry-level iPad on an annual basis since 2017, so we could see a new spec-bumped model in October 2023, although rumors are still thin on the ground.

iPhone SE 4

Rumors regarding Apple's plans for the next-generation iPhone SE have been mixed at best, with a lot of back and forth on when and indeed if we'll see a fourth-generation iPhone SE.

The latest rumors suggest the iPhone SE will be similar to the iPhone 14, featuring an all-display design with Face ID instead of Touch ID, a USB-C port, a single rear camera, and an "Action" button to replace the mute switch. There's also a possibility that it could include OLED display technology.

Another Apple snooze event of 2023 like WWDC. Apple Marketing is working hard to make a few updates sound like big upgrades. Yawn.

The fact the event is called Wanderlust leads me to believe it will feature either satellite calling (not just SOS) or some Vision Pro virtual travel gimmick. The former would definitely put the new iPhone on my to buy list. The later would mean Apple is out of ideas.

Don’t expect non-iPhone announcements at the iPhone announcement, got it.

The new iPhone SE should have been the only item in the list, but I guess you can’t make an article out of just that

... new Macs with M3 processors will have likely launched, and the fact that the $3,500 Vision Pro uses an M2 chip that is inferior to those in cheaper 2024 Macs may seem strange to the average consumer. ...
Ignoring the notion that the average consumer probably doesn't have the vaguest clue what Apple's different processors are nor what they do for you... I'm not sure that I agree with this particular point of concern.

I think a good parallel would be to compare the A16 to the M2 -- that is to say, the processor in the iPhone 14 Pro to the processor in the Mac Mini: the iPhone A16 is beat out by the M2 in many benchmarks, (particularly multi-core) even though the iPhones based on that A16 are quite a bit more expensive than the Mac Mini -- but the iPhone is also a much more compact device with a screen and other features that are simply not present on that Mini.

I expect that even our aforementioned average consumer is aware that you have to pay a premium to make things small, light and self-contained... and they should likewise easily grasp that the same logic applies to the Vision Pro.

I don't expect the following lines:

"I could be a little more excited to be here today"
"This is not quite our best iPhone yet"
"At an all-new low price of..."
"We wanted to stick with Lightning, but the EU took it out of our hands, so it is what it is"
"And you can order this from today, but most folk out there will be lucky to have it before Christmas"
"With base models starting at 256 Gb"
"Can't innovate any more... no, seriously!"
"Apple Watch 9 is a marginal upgrade and we've got a really exciting X coming in 2024, so best to wait"
"And we prioritised improving battery life"
"So it's time I stepped aside for a new CEO. Missing y'all already!"
And also “you’re not going to love it” ;)
