Roku CR app is SD only, the AppleTV version supports 1080p or the max resolution of the series you're watching. Boxee supported HD, as well as PS3, never was sure why Roku never got HD support but its why I never bothered with it.

Crunchyroll claims that you get 1080p on a Roku (it needs to be one that supports 1080p) if you are a premium member. Otherwise, you get SD.

Funny, I just saw this thread after I posted mine:
Why I bought -- then returned -- Roku 3

Sure, the Roku is better "on paper." Just like I'm sure some Android phones look better on paper than iPhones. And they, just like the Roku, leave a lot to be desired in terms of user experience. (At least, that has been my experience, as I detail in my post linked above.)

Sorry you had a hard time.My experience has been trouble free.As I said I like them both.:D:eek::):rolleyes::apple::D:D:D:D:D:cool::cool::cool::p;);););):

The Roku also has Crunchyroll. As far as channels you would actually watch, the main one that the Roku has that ATV doesn't is Amazon and that's never going to happen.

As a side note, Crunchyroll is one of the few channels other than Netflix that I actually watch on my Roku.

why is never gonna happen? Did Amazon say something about it?

I'll never watch crunchyroll. I don't need that much anime and if I ever wanna watch shin chan I can on Netflix so I'm set. ESPN requires TV subscription so that's out for me, the news channel is just meh. why can't they get any of the major networks on board? besides the fact they are probably being greedy and wanting all profits....

you cant "own" the content on those. i noticed they don't have any outside channels that allow you to buy movies-- amazon, vudu, bestbuy's channel, flixter for uv, etc.

Yeah, but in the other hand you can rent in iTunes...

right. there's no other ATV channels where you can specifically rent new releases for a day or two either.

the only things available on ATV are free and subscription-based channels. hulu, netflix, mlbtv, youtube, flickr, etc.

downloaded plex, much easier than I thought originally. just wish I could dismount the drive so I don't have to see it on my desktop. oh well.

Amazon would love being on the ATV. Apple does not want Amazon on the ATV since it directly competes with iTunes.

Couldn't the same argument be made for Netflix and Hulu?

I have no idea, but I imagine the reason Amazon isn't on the ATV is probably due to licensing issues between the two companies.

Whatever it is, I hope they settle it and bring Amazon on board. This of course, is surmising that they're even talking about it.

Amazon is a direct competitor in hardware. The others are not. Netflix and Hulu also do not sell content (they rent it) and the content is generally older.

seriously apple, why give us this crap? at least let us choose if we can uninstall it.

That was the big issue for me. Everyone has their own tastes so most content will be of little interest for most users. The UI is clunky enough without having to constantly click past lots of content you will never view and can't hide.

I use a mac mini as a media PC, it's better than the ATV for almost everything, but with apple being their obnoxious selves, I can't use it as a target for airplay mirroring despite being no technical reason why not.

Perhaps. However, Amazon Instant is found on the Xbox and Nintendo Wii. Certainly there is competition between them as well, right?

Xbox has Xbox Video which is a direct competitor. The one thing that you can't do on the Instant Video app on Xbox is rent movies directly on it. You need to rent it from the Amazon website first. I'm assuming this is something MS is blocking, although I think you can rent Vudu directly on their app, so I guess not.

I guess the difference here is Apple is more locked down than most and really wants no competition on their own devices.

Wii doesn't have a video shop, so Nintendo doesn't care there. also to play Netflix or amazon on xbox you need a gold subscription, so MS is getting their money, just not from movie rentals.

All fair points. In the end its too bad, at least, for now, that Amazon instant isn't available on the ATV.

Don't people read the posts in the thread they respond to? You can hide any of the apps except those on the first row by going into Settings and Parental Controls.

^^ of course not, that would be wise.

anywho, thinking about jailbreaking today, out of pure boredom. I'm guessing I can get new channels/features this way, yes?

Yes, that's my understanding about jailbreaking. You can get more content that way. However, if you have the Apple TV 3 you cannot jailbreak it at all.

nope, I have ATV2. thought about buying the newest one for 1080P, but don't see the point. I don't think my network would like streaming 1080 anyways, 720 does just fine

Just curious here, why do you think your network wouldn't like 1080p? Any modern LAN should be able to handle the load without breaking a sweat.

well I'm getting 15 down so in theory it shouldn't be awful, but I'm typically not running one stream at one time. I might be playing 360/ps3/wiiU while my wife is streaming on the iPad or watching the Roku in the bedroom while I'm downloading new episodes of top gear on the iMac.... so I figure I stress my ISP enough, don't wanna tick them off too bad.

I will look into it though :)
