What on earth is 'other'?

I'm running a mid 2010 MBP with 320gb storage, and I can account for roughly 160gb worth of data on my hard drive.

HOWEVER, there is 167gb worth of data labeled 'other' (colour-code: yellow). I have no idea where this is coming from, or what kind of files are taking up this space.

Has anyone experienced this or can anyone here help??

If you are using Grand Perspective, I believe it has a "Reveal in Finder" in the context menu.
