Mine's almost exclusively used in landscape. Especially for using Safari as I find the text difficult to read in portrait, but also most games and apps tend to work better for me in landscape.

The only exceptions are reading books or reading magazines.

It really is nuts how much Johnathan Ives is right. For me, I don't really think about the change from landscape to portrait. I just...change when I need to.

When I'm reading through Twitterific, I'm usually in portrait, same for browing. When I'm in Mail I'm usually in landscape. I don't even think about it....I just *insert CRAZY Scott Forstall eyes here* DO!

But, when I'm in portrait, I'm usually upside down. Home button on top makes perfect sense to me for some reason.

Landscape usually. But what I don't like are apps that force to one way or the other. The device is supposed to be use it your way, but many developers force to one orientation. The UI guidelines indicate developers should allow, so don't know why Apple would allow an app to be used only one way?

Like iCheddar, I use mine however it seems best for viewing. However, I prefer the Home button on the left or on the bottom.

This mention of the position of the Home button brings up another question for voting doesn't it?

I tend to web surf especially forum type site like this in portrait and watch video full size in landscape.

Double-tap the columned text in portrait mode while in this forum, it auto zooms in very nicely. :)

If I can go landscape then I go landscape. More for the keyboard typing. Portrait mode makes it impossible for me to type.

I'm always in landscape unless an app forces me to be in portrait (maybe 2-3 of the apps I own.)

The keyboard is easier to use, web browsing is nicer, and most of my videos and photos look better in landscape.

    1) takes development time and effort to get an app working in both modes when its not by its nature designed to be.

    2) Isnt this the very ethos of Apple these days? they want you to experience your device as they have envisioned it, not comprimised, not customised, the best experience in the way they believe is the best experience (note: ban on screen protectors, ban on flash etc). Similarly if an App developer believes the best way to enjoy their app is only in landscape/vertical then fair play to them.

    on topic:

websurfing and scrolling pages I go portrait, typing documents I go portrait ( and use a keyboard and have it docked).

For news readers, dropbox, goodreader etc apps which make use of a folder/bookmark browser by dividing the screen ill use landscape.

so both get used equally as much.

Usually when I'm in portrait mode I'll have the home button on the top, it feels more natural to me that way. When I am laying down on my side using the iPad I'll do portrait so it's easier to type on the keyboard. If I'm sitting up I'll have the bookstand up and I'll usually be in landscape mode.

I totally agree.. ESP regarding crazy eyes :)
I have been a hardcore portrait for browsing proponent for years. I smiled to realize my home button is on top as I type.

Mine's locked to landscape. I just wish it would sense when it's on its dock and go portrait, and I'd like iBooks to have its own setting.

I bought the landscape version of the iPad since I thought I'd be using it more like a computer (like the proportions for a monitor).

I suspect if you were a big eBook reader, you'd prefer the Portrait mode model.

Many apps have a preferential way to orient the device. Its likely to depend on the apps you choose to use.

eBooks on any reader seem to suit portrait more, landscape for almost everything else.

Web browsing i occasionally use portrait, but often the buttons and text fields are a little small and fiddly to select, so i switch back to landscape.

I do appreaciate having the choice though.

Yeah I've only had my iPad for a few days and I hate how much Ivy was right about this thing. I've been using it, switching between browsing or games or other apps and when I stop I realize the home button is on top (I usually always have it at the bottom out of force of habit from the iPhone). It really does just fit me.

I use ,ine mainly in portrait it's nicer for reading and web IMO.

People using landscape, which side is your ho,e button? Whenever I use landscape mode I keep the home button on the right so im not coving the speaker.
