I have a Mid-2009 MacBook Pro currently running Yosemite OS X 10.10.5. I've had to replace my printer and got a Brother MFC-J497 DW, which Prints, Scans and Faxes and, according to the manual requires a newer version OS System to accomplis it's abilities...but I have no idea what OS Version will be compatible with my MacBook Pro! I will appreciate ANY and ALL advice from my Forum sisters and brothers. Thanks!

I think you may be able to upgrade to El Capitan, although I am not positive Apple is still sending out updates for it.

Always the latest available for your model year. In your case, macOS 10.11.6. But it's not supported anymore.

According to the Brother website the drivers for that printer need 10.11 or higher so you can upgrade to El Capitan and install the software. At 11 years old your Mac is getting long in the tooth for any serious work. You should plan on upgrading but now isn’t an opportune time due to the ARM transition.

In addition to installing El Capitan as others have already suggested, if you desire a newer macOS; You can look into whether DosDude1's patcher tool supports your model, and perhaps get Mojave
