I'd like to add more USB 2.0 ports to my Powermac G5. I've tried 2 PCI cards already, but they both don't fit. Does anyone out here know what card I can buy that actually fits (and works)? Slots say: PCI-E X4 and PCI-E X8 ...

May not be relevant for you, but while it definitely should work with 10.5.8, it may not work with 10.6 PPC. My Sonnet Tempo card is not recognized by 10.6 PPC, and it takes some Openfirmware hackery to boot the Quad into it without KP :)
...because 10.6 10A96 and 10A190 are actually older than 10.5.8. The Quad's SATA ports don't use AHCI, so you could also try removing AppleAHCIPort.kext and IOAHCIFamily.kext to see if this prevents the KP with the Sonnet Tempo.

In terms of components, not really, rather it is a mix. Some things are newer in 10.5.8, some are newer in 10.6 PPC. But I think you are aware of that, it has been discussed quite extensively.

I could try throwing away those kexts. But safe mode does not work either, so I thought the issue may not be kext-related (safe mode supposed to forego unneeded kexts?).

I tested an AHCI PCIe SSD (it behaves like a third-party SATA card as far as the OS can see) in every 10.5.x version and got a KP mentioning the AHCI kexts in 10.5.0 through 10.5.5, but not in 10.5.6 and 10.5.7. The AHCI kexts in SL-PPC are older than 10.5.6’s IIRC.

Thank you, I will try it when I am in the office (home PowerMac has 10.6, but no Tempo).

ahoi! Marcel,

why do you want to use a card to add more USB 2.0 ports to your Powermac G5 ???
A simple USB-Hub could do the same, at least for me.
---
Power Mac G5, PowerMac11,2
10.5.8
4 ports USB-Hub, no-name product, price about 15 €
---
P.S.
PCIe Firewire card advice:
i bought a used Firewire 400 card (8 €), again no-name product,
"slotted" in and it works.
-
Firewire 800 card new (35 €), manual says windose!
(Pic)
Guess what again..."slotted" in and ok.
---
Yeah, that´s my G5 philosophy:
Buy it, try it, error or success.

Have a nice day.

That actually helped! No more OF tricks at every login! Thank you.

By the way, maybe you know what kext may enable SATA card recognition then in 10A190?
