So the current M1 has 2 TB/USB 4 ports and one headphone jack.
Do we really expect more given the new MBP only has 3 TB?

I don’t expect SD slot, or even HDMI…but only the addition of the MagSafe.

I'm managing okay with the 2 usb-c, but getting magsafe would be pretty good. Losing a port to charing is such a waste. The old Airs had 4 things, 1 charge, 2 usb and a display/thunderbolt. But I'm not expecting a return of the dedicated display port...

Left side
  • MagSafe
  • 0 or 1 USB-C
  • Headphone jack
Right side
  • 1 or 2 USB-C
Thoughts
  • No SD card slot. Aren't they only used by photographers, who would buy a MBP anyway?
  • Headphone jack needs to be on the left again, as most headphones have the cable on the left.
  • One USB-C should be on the right side, to enable charging from the right (through USB-C). Ideally, there'd be a connector each side. Depends on how generous they feel. 3 total would be great, although I don't see that happening.
  • If they want to go the cheap route, they'll plop MagSafe, 2 USB-C and the headphone jack on the left side and call it a day (only possible if they move away from the wedge design)

What I want: 1x Magsafe, 1x HDMI, 1x USB-A, 1x USB-C (even better would be 2x each of those, 1 on each side but I'm trying to be a little bit realistic ?)

What I expect: 1x Magsafe, 2x USB-C, maybe 1x Headphone

What I expect: 1x Magsafe, 2x USB-C, 1x USB-A, 1xSDcard, 1 display port. Not less.
Some expected the new MBP to come with an USB-A port. They didn't, which tells me Apple is definitely done with USB-A (at least in laptops).

DisplayPort? No way. If they put in a dedicated video out port, then it will be HDMI, which is much more widely used and also carries audio.

I'm surprised but I want the MagSafe charging port. I like the MagSafe design that uses the standard USB-C Power Delivery charger with a special cable. Other than that, I would want TB4 with support for 2 external displays and it would be nice if the ports were on both sides of the computer. I have no use for HDMI ports, USB-A, or SD card slots.

Edit: Headphone jack with the new high impedance design.

They couldn't give up all of their dongle revenue now could they?

I'd be happy if they keep what we already have and add the SD card slot. I know Apple considers it a pro feature for some reason but I think they should bring it back to the Air too. But please Apple, don't remove the great headphone jack!

Mag-safe.
2 or 3 USB-C (at least 1 on either side)
Headphone jack (preferably on the left side).

Then make it as thin and light as possible.

Meh, I neither think Apple is motivated by that reason nor that they care about that money.

USB-A is done. I bought a bunch of USB-B/mini-USB/micro-USB to USB-C cables and replaced the existing ones. I only have a few USB-A sticks left, that I seem to find less and less use for.

Given its target audience, a damn USB-A. For the MBP they have an excuse as USB-A ports aren't "pro", but since the Air is for "normal" people, I'm sure it would be nice to easily plug into a printer, use a cheap thumb drive, or plug into university-owned lab equipment (for students) and not have to run around with dongles

Maybe it will have just 1 port again like the 12" MacBook, but it will be like the Magic Mouse and be on the bottom so you can't use it while it charges.

I would be happy with MagSafe and if they moved one of the USB/TB ports to the right hand side of the machine.
... and move the headphone jack over to the left hand side. Since most single-wire headphones have the wire connected to the left ear cup, this would prevent the cable from crossing over the keyboard.

Obviously, very few people would use the AirPods Max in wired mode, but it's funny that the new MBP's have the earphone jack on the left side while the APM have the lightening connector in the right ear cup.
