Just to go a bit further. Apple supports up to 64 GB RAM. The 2019 iMacs work with up to 128GB.
Hi There! First time posting, just got out of a hole because I needed to update my old (dead) equipment, and found this excellent thread. The thing is, I've seen this guy using 128 gb and working 100% fine
But what I can't find it anywhere is this: In the apple documentation, they state the limit for 2019 27' retina iMacs is 64Gb, but that's for the second configuration available; the cheapest configuration states 32Gb max. So, here's my question: Does the 128 Gb add work on both computers? Or just on the second best configuration? I don't want to choose the wrong option only to realize it doesn't admit so much RAM months later.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Yes, Apple "Sell" and "Support" up to 64GB. In other words: a) you can buy a 27" 2019 iMac with up to 64GB, and b) they will fix issues with an iMac that has up to 64GB. But that is different to "works with". All 2019 27" iMacs "work with" up to 128GB.

If you have a workload that needs more than 64GB (and that is unusual) then go ahead and buy from Apple with 8GB and purchase 4x32GB from OWC (or elsewhere). Just keep the original 8GB in case you need support from Apple.

The popular config here is buy the iMac with 8 GB (2x4GB) and add 32GB (2x16GB) for a total of 40GB. That leaves an easy future upgrade to 64GB by replacing the 2x4GB with another 2x16GB.

If your workload requires 128GB then it probably needs the most powerful CPU and GPU options too.

That’s great to know, @gilby101. I was in doubt if there was any shadowy limitation for the inferior
i5 6 core 3 GHz versus the i9 8 core 3,6 GHz. I’m decided for the 32 GB option you suggested, keeping the original 8 Gb, I only need to choose between the 6 core or the 8 one for 200€ more.

Thank you very much for the heads up.

On my brand new early 2019 iMac with i9 and Radeon 48, I installed 64GB (2 HyperX HX426S15IB2K2/32 Kit).
Working flawlessly up to now.
After memory upgrade Multicore Geekbench 5 went from 6000 to 8200

32gb Samsung M471A4G43MB1-CTD RAM works beautifully in my 2019 i9 iMac great price too, got mine for £130 each in UK

Hi everyone from Malaysia, brand new Mac user here.

Yes this RAM will work fine. I have this exact RAM in my 2019 27" iMac.

Just goes to show what Apple is charging on their Ram!!!!

Just ordered for 4x16 GB for a new 2019 iMac.

My cost: $200
Apple, upgrade from 8GB to 64GB when ordering a new iMac: $1000
Saved by just inserting 4 modules: $800

Apple this is ridiculous!

Why buying the older, officially unsupported RAM, when the newer and fully supported one (CT2K16G4S266M) costs ~10 EUR more?

The $800 is known as the tech illiteracy tax for those who unfortunately don’t know any better

I just got my new 2019 iMac and ordered this Crucial memory:

Crucial 32GB Kit (16GBx2) DDR4 2666 MT/s (PC4-21300) CL19 DR x8 SODIMM 260-Pin for Mac - CT2K16G4S266M https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TKZKPJV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_S6F-DbSW5EFTF

I tried it every which way and my computer won’t boot up with it...I just get a black screen. It’s supposed to work according to Crucial. Any ideas?

This is the RAM that I bought back in July for my 2019 iMac i9 27" and it works great!

Right now I'm seeing a difference of about €30. I bought the less expensive "unsupported" Crucial RAM and just installed it. Working just fine.

Did you use them alongside your original 8gb apple RAM? I want to get these but found an amazon costumer who said they had problems getting them to work with stock 8gb ram (2x4)

Can I get a help?

for iMac 2019 basic 8gb ram configuration, can I use two of these?

Dell Memory 16GB - 2RX8 DDR4 SODIMM 2666MHZ
NON-ECC, Dual rank, unbuffered

To me, this seems perfectly fine to insert and use with two 4gb rams in current iMac.

How does it look?

Thank you.

I recommend OWC. Check out the prices on this page. $79 for 16gb and $144 for 32gb.

Ah, I see. They are much more expensive than OWC. I'm glad that I have not purchased yet.
Thanks for the information!!

I've ordered my mother a refurbished 2019 27" 6-core i5 iMac with 8GB of RAM. I previously had a 2019 8-core i9 iMac of my own & used the 32GB kit of Crucial memory from Amazon (linked several times in this thread). My mother doesn't need that much memory so I was looking at the 16GB kit. It's single rank which from what I've read shouldn't make a difference but I wanted to get validation here, just in case :). So, will this work:
