What´s a good price for used MP 4,1

With the new MP in the horizon, I´m thinking about buying a "new" MP 4,1 (8 core 2,26GHz).
It seems like it will cost me around 1.200$ + 25% additional $ for tax, costums etc. as I live in Denmark....
To me, the price seems fair, but what do you guys think?

Hi Baunkjaer. The price is fine depending on it's specs. Does it come with an upgraded videocard like the Radeon 4870 or 5770HD or Nvidia 285GTX? And is the ram around 16G or more? In the USA $1200 is the average rate more or less includes keyboard and mouse.
 
Well, most of them are stock 4,1´s - 6GB DDR3 and the GT120. Few comes with HD 4870 and 16GB...
If I buy, I´ll sell my 3,1 (if possible) with my spare 180GB intel 330, 2TB Seagate, and the spare HD 4870.
My GTX 570 and the Sonnet (with drives) will go directly in the new machine. As for RAM, I don´t care that much, as I´ll probably will fill it with a 24GB kit (6x4GB), which goes for around 200$ on the bay.
 
Hi Baunkjaer. I guess that would be fine since ram for the 2009 is cheaper to buy. Happy buying. 🙂

Mine is on ebay.de right now for 1400 euro. I've had 5 emails in the last two hours.

I think $1200/900 euro is not quite enough.

Well, as mentioned you have to take 25% tax and custom into account. Hence the DP 2,26Ghz will cost around 1.600$.
But I´ll take a closer look at ebay.de - might save a few bucks when it´s time to buy 🙂

Only if you import it from the states..EU there should be no tax..
 
I´m aware of that, and think the tax might equal the price difference - EU vs USA.
Until further I´m only investigating the market. When time comes, I´m sure I´ll find a decent DP MP 4.1 to a ditto price.
Hopefully selling my 3,1 will help a little, even though it might be difficult to sell in Denmark 🙁

In the end it might..

My only real question is how much it's going to cost shipping 18KG plus packaging in an oversized box via USPS.. It costs ~$90 to ship a bike frame which has a total weight of 8KG packaging included from my APO which is US to CONUS.

You're 3,1 would still bring 1000 euro on ebay here.
 
If you hve a MacPro shipped internationally have them pack the cards and drives separately - even if they consolidate it all into the same shipping crate.

There's a high enough probability of damage shipping it assembled, to actually worry about.
 
My only question is why are you going to go through all of the trouble of upgrading your system from a 3,1 8-core 3.0 to a 4,1 8-core 2.26 you won't see much of a speed improvement. Your current Pro is pretty tricked out. It just seems like a lot of hassle for little reward?

The 4.1 can be substantially upgraded.

Agreed you do have a good cpu upgrade path, the problem is the 2.26 is a lidless cpu and if you don't know how to compensate for the few millimeters difference it could wind up costing you a damaged cpu, which is an expensive proposition.

The 3,1 that he currently has is still a solid system, especially with all the upgrades he's done to it.

I still think its a lot of hassle for a little reward. If it were a 12 core or the 8 core 2.93 then that would be a whole different story.

There are enough guides floating around that show the proper way to compensate for the extra 2mm of lid. The "count the turns" method seems to be the most straight forward, others use shims to insure proper height. That upgrade practically doubles the performance over a maxed out 3.1. I'd say its worth it if he needs the performance and can recoup a sizable portion of the purchase by selling his 3.1.
 
I´m aware of the issue with CPU upgrade in the DP 2009.
I´ve searched for it, and I don´t think it will be a problem.
 
I bought my 4,1 octo 2.26 on eBay for $910.

Perfect condition with not a scratch on it.

16GB of RAM and a Radeon 4870

You can get a good deal if you're patient
 
I just thought it was a little ironic that right after this discussion a person had a problem with the 2.26 lidless CPU upgrade.

Obviously it can be done and has been done, but what I have seen/heard is its much more of a greater risk when you have the lidless CPU versus the lidded CPU.

I know a few people who have done the 2.26 CPU upgrade and had problems, some right off the bat and others a little down the line when their system started to kernel panic after the upgrade. Its always easier said then done.

If you have the stomach for it by all means it seems like it would be a fun upgrade, and could yield some great performance boosts. For me I would be afraid that I would have a problem at some point that would cause me downtime that I can't afford.

I'm not trying to ruffle anyones feathers. Its just an interesting topic which I believe is about upgradability vs stability.

For a 4,1 machine in stock configuration in perfect working order, and 8/9 out of 10 physical condition (few or no scuffs) and original box (important to me).

Single proc:

- Great price: $800
- Good price: $900
- Avg price: $1000

Add $300 to above for dual 2.26.

I paid $1000 for mine which was basically in new condition with original box, etc. If you have a couple of weeks to wait for the right deal, you can get them for less.

$600 - W3680
$500 - gtx680 mac edition (or equivalent)
$220 - 24gb 1333 ram
$200 - 256gb SSD

So your into it around $2500 for pretty much one the fastest mac pro configurations you can get. Going dual won't really get you a "faster" machine unless your applications can leverage the extra cores/threads, but if you do plan to add around $1600-$1800 more (assuming 2 x 6-core). Again, patience and research might lower that a little. If you want to start out with a newly refurbished machine from Apple, who's warranty you will immediately void, add $800 to the base price for a 2010 quad, and $1100 for a 2012 unit.

Now for the single proc machine, from a sheer performance perspective, you're probably paying oh around $1200 mac tax (and I'm being very generous). If your OK with that (I was this time), then there you go.

Just as a reference, I just sold my 3,1 MP with 12 GB of RAM with (2) 500 GB drives and an 80 GB IntelSSD for $1300. The 4,1 is probably more desirable.
 
Only to those who know the difference apparently. You got a great price. Not going to use the word rape, but umm...nicely done.
