A quicker way to convert audio files to other formats.

Having to change the import settings via Preferences, go into Advanced, convert the file, and then go back into Preferences to put everything back is annoying. If there was just a drop down menu under Advanced, it would make life so much easier.
I agree. Something like dbpoweramp would be amazing.

1) Remember my sorting. I'm so sick of sorting my tracks on year every time I restart iTunes...
2) No errors in tagging. It's not seldom that when tagging an album one of the songs won't get tagged.
3) Faster, especially in scrolling

I use playlist folders organized by artist and under the folders I have smart playlists organized by that artists albums. I'd like to be able to do a global view options change so all my playlists columns are changed to the same view at the same time instead of having to select each playlist individually and make the change over and over again.

Another thing... I've been having problems with my playlists getting scrambled when they are transferred to my iPod Touch. So the songs in a album don't show up on the iPod in the order they are in the playlist on my computer. I don't have shuffle songs turned on.

I would like to be able to create a Smart Playlist based on the dimensions of the album artwork, and wether or not it is embedded.

Doug's Applescripts has a script that will do this for you. Presuming you're on a Mac, it's called "Assimilate View Options."

All my wishes are currently restricted to ID Tags:

  1. I want to be able to edit Sort information before importing a CD, rather than having to edit tags afterwards. For that matter, in an ideal world, Sort information is already established with the proper alphabetization of artist names.
  2. I want to be able to edit the Release Date field.
  3. I want to have increased control over printing inserts for burnt CD's; there's something wrong about iTunes printing in one sized font instead of having at least a "fit to page" feature.
  4. Along with the increased support for classical music, I want to stop using "Classical" as a genre altogether. I'd rather see "Baroque (Italian)" or "Impressionist (French)" genres. I've tried changing these myself, but for a lot of works it's simply too hard for someone with no more understanding of this kind of music to properly sort.

While I'm glad to see the option for dark backgrounds, methinks iTunes needs a total refresh. It's too clunky, bloated and slow. It's not very Mac-like anymore.

i agree. iTunes is still a carbon app and so while it looks like a normal OS X app it still in some ways behaves very different to a stock cocoa OS X app.

You can still do this by option clicking the green button. Also, there is a terminal command that will allow you to change the functionality to a regular click.

Code:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes zoom-to-window -bool YES

thanks for that! i actually liked how the green button in 9.0 behaved similar to other OS X apps.

Well, I am getting pretty tired of two things in iTune's basic functionality...please anyone help me if they have any scripts or know any prefs I might have missed to remedy these.

1. When I type in the search bar for say "coldplay" and it pulls all my Coldplay songs, then I click the first result, it plays, but if that happens to be the last track of that album, it will go to another album that is in some other sorting category (instead of going to the next Coldplay song in the search results). Hope I explained that correctly.

2. Lastly, I hate how under the "Album" header, my Soundtracks are all screwed...my "Matrix" Soundtrack has many different composers and even though they are all the same Album, they are all split up all over the Albums list.

Apart from the normal it's way too slow complaint, I want iTunes to be able to play (and sync) a decent amount of video formats. I can't be bothered converting files for it anymore.

What are you using for Album Artist? This typically fixes this issue. Example:

Song - Song A
Track 1 of X
Artist - Artist A
Album Artist - Various Artists
Album - The Matrix (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Composer - Composer A

Song - Song B
Track 2 of X
Artist - Artist B
Album Artist - Various Artists
Album - The Matrix (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Composer - Composer B

As long as the Album Artist and Album fields match, iTunes should keep all the songs together. You might also look at your Sort Album and Sort Album Artist fields to make sure they're uniform. I suggest:

Sort Album: Matrix
Sort Album Artist: ZZ Various Artists

Unless, of course, there's just one performer on the soundtrack, in which case use that artist's name.

There is an old feature that I would like returned to iTunes: Equalizer presets across the entire library. You can still do this with individual songs, but not everything with one click like before. You used to be able to do it both ways. There used to be a button at the bottom that would allow an equalizer preset for the entire library. I always had everything set to "treble booster" because I liked the way it amplified the vocals in songs. I don't want to have to do that with every song individually. I would like that feature to be returned as an option like before. Anyone who doesn't want to do that wouldn't have to, but for those of us who do, the option should be there.

I have to add:

4) Copying tags/artwork (when you add a song to an album for instance)
5) Multiple Genres in tag (a song could have the genres Christmas, Soundtrack, Italian, and Rock at the same time for instance)
6) Release Date in tags (if I have a remastered version of an album for instance, I write in the Comments field the release date of the new version, and in Year the original release date)
7) Original Artist in tags (if P!nk covers Led Zeppelin I now write in Composer "Led Zeppelin" as I'm not sure who wrote that song, so Original Artist would solve the problem).
8) Preserve sorting order in track when having multiple artists in one album (it's not uncommon that various artist are on one album, for instance with "special guests"; but I want my albums sorted on Year, then on Album, then on Track No. (which goes quite nicely, except that I have to sort it on Year every restart of iTunes), but it gets screwed up when having multiple artists!)

+1 I use a rudimentary tagging system in the Grouping tag but I'd prefer a real tagging implementation.

OH YES!

That, and being able to use the "Automatically convert files to 128 kbps" iTunes provides for syncing the iPod Shuffle for all other iPods and the iPhone as well.

[add] And everything Stormbringer said.

Being able to burn mp3 discs from my DRM-free iTunes purchases. What a crock. Looking back on it now I'm rather sorry I bought into the iTunes purchases - I can't do anything with the files unless I have an iPod?

edit: So, after some googling it looks like I just need to change the import settings in iTunes and I can then convert AAC to mp3, correct? Didn't know about that.

The ability to have iTunes compress songs to smaller bitrates when syncing them to all versions of the iPod, not just the shuffle. My home library is all in Apple Lossless, but that means I can only put about 1/3 of it on my Classic. I don't need lossless files on my iPod, since I use it mainly when commuting. I also don't want two copies of everything in my library- that would make things too disorganized and screw with playcounts. The technology is there, simply enable it across the board.

iTunes aliases/shortcuts that would allow collaborations (ex. Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton doing "Islands In The Stream") to appear under multiple artists or songs to be shared between its original album and a greatest hits collection, all while keeping it as one singular file, sharing play counts, ratings, tags, etc.

Better performance for large libraries

I'm sick of watching that beachball everytime I click on something in iTunes. I know my pooter is a bit old but it certainly seems like they can come up with something better than updating an 80 MB XML file every time I click on something.

wth.. I updated to 9.0.2 and now everytime I remove a song, the song will be removed but a blank line remains in my library =/ It fixes itself when I modify a song but it still very, very annoying. I thought updates were supposed to fix bugs, not add bugs =/

only in your country

There's an album I want to buy, in iTunes UK, but not in the US. When I sign into iTunes UK, it will not let me purchase it. Why not? Why not an across-the-spectrum store? What kind of "copyright protections" or similar nonsense could be holding this back?

Simple thing copyright laws prevent US copyrightholders from selling their stuff in the UK (and in Germany etc for that matter) because there is somebody in that country who paid probably an obscene amount of money to get the right to sell this stuff in that paticular country. You need a credit card from the country you want to buy. Same with audible and the likes. That is not likely to change in the near future

The playlist interface could be a little cleaner.

Are smart playlists broken in the most recent version of iTunes? I tried to create a nested playlist and its just not working.

Match Any:

Artist is Prince
Artist is Prince & The Revolution
Artist is Prince & The New Power Generation

Match all:

Playlist is not Duplicates

Match any:

Grouping is Full Albums
Grouping is Singles
Grouping is Bootlegs

I get a list of EVERYTHING that matches the last criteria only. If I remove two of the artist rules so that I only have "Artist is Prince", the playlist works.

I have tried re-ordering the rules, nothing. What am I doing wrong here?

Agreed; iTunes should be split up into dedicated apps - the iTunes Store, the iTunes Library and the iTunes Player, essentially.

Also: more MORE closed captioning in movies, and TV SHOWS, dammit!

rip DVDs
bring back the option of the shopping cart in the ITMS/app store! no more clicking and holding to add, just either have it set for one click buying or the shopping cart....
not really an itunes thing but an ipod wish is the ability to have sub-folders in the playlists on your ipod so i'm not going through a few dozen playlists
