What should be the thickness of future iPhones?

  • iPhone 11 thickness is about right, going forward

  • iPhones should now begin to be thinner in future models

  • iPhones should continue to be thicker

that would be a monstrously big and heavy phone. Not practical at all.
Sure.

Are you saying that the iPhone 5/5s is monstrously big and heavy?

How about the iPhone 4 and 4s? The iPhone SE?

Or has it just been conveniently forgotten that Apple has already done this?

The height x width dimension is what is most responsible for the heavy weight. 5s/SE is nearly half the weight of recent and current 5.8” screen models. Larger screen equals bigger battery required which adds even more weight.

I’m not a 5s, SE (or 6 - 8) fan anymore...bezel / home button design too inefficient re body size (and phone weight), vs. screen size you get.

Hope Apple never produces another home button phone. If they get in screen fingerprint reader working (vs. more expensive Face ID technology), maybe they won’t need to (to produce a new budget phone).

I think the most comfortable-to-hold iPhone I've ever had was the iPhone 3G. I'd love for a new iPhone to be slightly thicker than the iPhone 11, but in a similar teardrop style form factor as the 3G. I really didn't even care that it was plastic.

I think 9mm-10mm is a good thickness. Room for a bigger battery, would probably be enough to rid us of camera bumps, but still handleable.

I just don't understand this issue with weight. People pay gig money to work out, they can't hold up a few extra ounces there phone weighs? I personally prefer something that feels substantial and strong.

We all know Apple seemed determined to make thinner products for years, but has stopped recently with iPhones. Do you think future iPhones should get thinner, thicker or stay about the size of iPhone 11?

Personally, I hope they get thinner and lighter without sacrificing features/performance.

Definitely, thinner and lighter but there are people who maybe asking for longer battery life. I was testing my my iPhone 11 Pro Max by running iphone to max performance settings (full brightness, auto brightness off etc.) And played 4K Ultra HD videos at 1080P in YouTube continuously. iPhone went from 100% to 20% in 6 hours and 30 mins. In my normal usage it lasts over a day without charging.

Have you conveniently forgotten how much better the cameras are now compared to then?

the XR/11 are thicker than the 5 and still have a huge bump. The cameras are better so they take up more room.

Now imagine those phones thicker to get rid of the bump. It would be a tank.

Exactly. You wanna know why my Pro Max feels lighter than my previous XS Max? Simple. The case I had on XS Max was thicker and heavier versus the thin skin like case I'm rocking on the Pro Max. People love light phones but then add an otter-box brick on it LoL.

I disagree.

Apple could do it if they wanted to, they just won't because the bump is what they are using as a branding thing.

And no, I have not forgotten that cameras have gotten better. However, I don't need that camera. I am not a pro photographer, a vlogger or someone that needs to take pics in the dark.

As I have mentioned MANY times here, 99% of my camera roll is photos taken of the stuff sitting on Walmart's shelves so my wife can decide which brand of ice cream or cookies she wants me to bring home. Why do I need the current Apple camera for that? So my wife can decide which tub of ice cream or box of cookies?!

Most of the rest are screen caps to show others something. The camera is just not a feature I use.

That said other people do use it, which goes back to my previous argument that Apple could if they wanted.

So what you are saying is because I don’t use the camera or care about the quality no one else should?

Also the bump is not a branding thing. Don’t be ridiculous. They could make it thicker they just don’t want to because they know it wouldn’t be ergonomic.

Did you miss the part where I stated others do use the camera?

That was part of my statement that Apple could make it flush it they wanted.

At this point I believe we are going to have to disagree.

You think I am being ridiculous and I am not moving from my position that they can make it flush if they want to.

And yes, i do believe the camera bump is part of their design. You aren't moving me from that either.

The few people I know who appreciate the design / weight / thinness of an iPhone are ones who use them without cases, myself included. No chance I’m putting a case on an iPhone 11 Pro if I get one.

I would welcome thicker iPhones, definitely, with one condition: All that added thickness goes to battery life. Not that I needed the battery life, my Xʀ on iOS 12 is far more than enough, it’s just that it would be nice.
I guess 9-10mm would be fine.

That sounds awful!

it's not like the iPhone is evolving like a biological organism towards better and better refinement- it'll change in the future just for the sake of change. Just like cars.
So for a while it'll be thicker, then the new ooh and aah will be thinner. Then it'll get thicker again. Etc.
It'll never be as thin as a sheet of paper or thick as a deck of cards

Thickness hasn't been a problem for quite some time. I'll take features over being thin.

And.....that's why I've been married 25 years. ZING!
