Actually, the 350 is kind of an exception to the firewire rule. It is a slot loading imac. It just doesn't have firewire as a cheapo version that was for sale at the same time as the 400 sl imacs. You should be able to install tiger without xpostfacto. Search the threads, people have done it.

Hmm, really? That's not what i've heard before, but i'll take your word for it. I finished installing the 10.4 already with Xpostfacto and the iMac is running happily it right now :)

If its done and works great, good for you. But the 350 and the 400 have the same MB less the physical firewire. So OSX "thinks" it has firewire.

I really thought my mum's iMac G3 500MHz could not run Tiger

I guess i'll have to try again, then.

Fun Trick

Want to have this iMac scream? Allow you Mac to startup with the prompt for a user name and password. (System Preferences / Accounts / Login Options / Name and Password clicked)

At the login prompt, type in >console after the name.

The screen will clear and you have a pure *NIX environment. With no Aqua in the way, your G3 will scream faster than you can say OS9.

Not when it comes to PhotoShop...

Yeah, and if you pull the power cord out and shove the whole computer into a cannon and shoot it out then your computer will fly really fast also. ;) My point is, the only aspect of computer speed that matters is how fast it will allow you to do what you want to do. And for most people, the command line will not allow them to do anything that they want to do. So how fast it runs things that that don't care about is irrelevant.

I appreciate the point you make though.

Seems that my iMac can't run youtube videos smoothly either. What a bummer. I guess 350Mhz isn't just enough for that.

If you click the box on the bottom right of the youtube video, it makes its smaller and you can stream it better. Its still not bad for a 7 year old video card:) Also, make sure only your browser is running when you do it.

Also, on any computer you use, but especially on slow computers, you should open up activity monitor and check that no background tasks are taking up precious CPU power. Make sure to have the view pull down menu set to "all processes" amd not just "my processes." That's how I just found out recently that on my G4 400 Mhz sawtooth that my stupid printer/scanner by Hewlett Packard was running a ridiculous and unneeded root process that was always running even when I wasn't using the device and it was always taking up 25% of my CPU!

Remember kids, always check activity monitor's all processes to see if a thief is stealing your computer power.

Slow Imac g3

I've got an old imac G3 ruby. It's 400mhz 320 ram 10.0 gb hhd.
When I purchased this computer it had os 10.4 installed on it. A while back, while downloading updates, one of the updated didn't download correctly and when I rebuted the computer it only showed a grey screen and failed to start up! after many failed attempts I installed a copy of os 10.3 I was given. the Computer was super slow, but still worked fine. Recently the imac started failing to open certain websites and others load but all the features don't work! web sites such as, You tube, and ESPN don't work correctly and others such as MLB.com make the internet shut down when opened! I've tried reinstalling os 10.4 but get an error stating that this comp is uncapable of running os10.4. I only use this machine for internet and itunes! Is this comp just ready to retire of or can these problems be rectafied? anyone???
Thanks!

I think the computer has seen better days. Using my iMac G3 500MHz even with an upgraded 120GB 7200 RPM HDD and 768MB of RAM it is still kind of painful to do browsing. The CPU is just too slow.

I think it's time for you to get a newer computer. It's not worth the suffering and time wasted waiting for things to load.
