What should I get for my birthday?

With your Mac, my choice would certainly be EyeTV. It is a dream of mine when I get a new Mac. Would be a good use of your 23" display. Elgato has just improved the software, so it should make the choice even better.

haha, thanks for the advice. I can't ask for cash, because I'll just end up getting something I didn't want.

I have a job and $13,000 saved up. I'd say a PB and a 23" display is pretty extravagant for an 18 year old. 🙄

Dude my only question is how the hell have you managed to save up $13,000 by the time you are 18?! 😱 Are you a dealer or a pimp or something?

SAVE YOUR MONEY!

I mean, don't be the type of person that has little to show for his money, because it's all in the bank... Save it until you really need it, or find something you really want.

Don't just look for things to spend money on. You're in for a rude awakening next year... College. It depends on where you end up going, but do you have any idea how expensive college is? You're going to need that money. Never LOOK for things to spend money on, those are never wise purchases.

Here's a good option: Invest! Bank interest stinks, go see a financial advisor, and see what better things you could be doing with that $13,000.

I'm turning 18 next week and I have no idea what I want.

...and I don't want to get clothes, because my parents pay for that anyways....

I've got about $300 that my parents usually spend on me, so I can't get anything too extravigant...

I once worked in an office with about 25 people in our section. The manager would make everyone pay a couple of £ for each persons birthday present (usually vouchers) from the team with a card etc. and the person whose birthday it was would have to buy everyone a cake.

When I said I didn’t want to either have anything bought for me or be made to pay for others it all got a bit frosty.

I celebrate achievements of note when they happen or just try to party for the sake of it. I buy gifts out of love or appreciation and I never ask for anything from friends and family. If they came to me and said they wanted an iPod for their birthday I’d think them quite rude.

I'm with you on the cakes front though. Where I work the obligatory card is sent around for everyone to sign and the majority of people really don't give a damn about the person so just put a perfunctory 'Happy Birthday' message in it. Then the poor sod has to shell out twenty quid for cakes for everyone. How is that a nice birthday gift - spending money on people who don't really care about you!
