I know this forum has lots of folks who are handy with maintaining/upgrading their own computers. And I think using what we have and maintaining it is the best solution!

But I'll be honest, I don't currently have the capacity to do any updgrades or research/learn about Macs, beyond a few hours a year so as you can guess im looking for a computer that's ready to go.

-I'm looking for
--- a low maintenance Mac for next 5 years,
--- used
--- (preferably used $500-$1200) and
--- that I can use for emails (several tabs open), updating my website and editing a few photos as well as printing shipping labels for our business.

In 2021 I bought a for $400:
- iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011). The guy I bought it from put Mojave on. I got it home and it was super slow opening/using chrome browser. I wondered if something was wrong. Guy suggested it was because of wifi card and he replaced which helped a little. Also suggested I use Safari which is considerably faster than Chrome. I am 30ft away from wifi and in a log building. Compare this to my cheap Dell laptop from 2019 and I did a time comparison and the Dell is 3x faster on opening browser or printing shipping label. Sometimes I can type regular speed and yes other times, for hours or even days on end typing is delayed by several seconds making it difficult to type as you can imagine.
Now, Safari won't open my shopify store website for updating it. Safari says I need to update it but when I go to do that I learn Mojave can't. I asked guy I bought computer from and he said I could bring it in and he would remove Mojave and replace with newer OS. He's 1 hr away and im not convinced he's solutions are worth my time. Hence why I want a newer/faster computer!
- Processor: 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
- Memory: 32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (when I bought computer it was only 8GB. While using web browser with 2 tabs open I compared it was 3x slower than my cheap laptop. So I bought 32BG which did increase speed a little)
- AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB

I've learned this computer is too slow but some days its regular speed. I don't understand at all. Anyways, as you can tell my knowledge is low but

- I'd love to learn what you would suggest for a used up to $1000 Mac?

Lots of options, but the thing that would be most important to me would be:

• adequate RAM (16GB min), or the ability to upgrade
• SSD (no HD, too slow on any modern Mac)
• 2017 or newer, for max usable life

If your current Mac has a HD, not SSD, that is the biggest single performance problem. APFS is built for SSD use, and performance is really poor on any HD.

Having said that...all Intel Macs will have fairly short lives at this point. So expecting more than a few years may be unrealistic. For a few hundred $ more, you could get a modern AS Mac. Better in every way one can measure performance. Any M1 with 16GB will run circles around nearly any Intel Mac, even with double the RAM. And they will be supported longer, no matter what.

I have the same iMac with only 4GB of RAM and improved it's performance by adding an additional 8GB of RAM and adding a 512GB SSD, whilst keeping the 1TB HDD. Then made the SSD the boot drive and it has been great ever since.

Think the issue also might be in relation to the OS as the most recent version of software that model should be using is High Sierra, but you have Mojave installed, which came after.

Regarding upgrading, you could try getting a used M1 24" iMac on eBay.

Wonderful. Thanks for outlining some minimums for me to look for. Good to know about HD and also about adjusting my expectations on longevity. At the upper limit of my price range $1200 CAD im looking at the M1 Mac mini but it's just 8GB. What would be an example where I might notice the difference between 8GB and 16GB? and is 512GB SSD storage enough? I don't plan to store much on here. I use an external hard drive. Id be using for emails, several web browsers tabs open, printing shipping labels, streaming video, music, editing photos.

thanks! yeah hmmm I'm glad to hear your improvements. Unfortunately I don't have the skill/time/interest to learn how to add 512Gb SSD or make SSD the boot drive, although it's good to know it can be done. I agree it is odd that person I bought computer from in 2021 put Mojave on and sold it to me saying it would be better. As I have mentioned issues with computer, he has offered to put a different OS on but it's an 1hr drive away and I've already gone to him few times with other issues so I don't have great confidence in his skill. Too bad I don't know how to fix myself or have someone closer to help. But I definitely appreciate the recommendation for the M1 24'' iMac. I just checked on Ebay and it seems like a great option!

I have a 2009 iMac that runs great! I will be upgrading the ram to quicken it - and upgrading the Ram is easy. Turn off computer, lie MAC face down on table, open door/slot at bottom of screen, push on ram to pop it out, push new ram in, close door/slot, stand computer up, turn it back on.

But first, I'd start with the below

It also sounds like you need to run the disk utility. I had an issue one time where my iMac was crawling - I ran disk utility and fixed the disk and it was up and running like normal again

Look at the section disk utility in the link below:

If you are considering the 24” iMac, try to get the one with 8GPU cores (not 7) and 4 ports (not 2), as the one with only 2 ports (Base model) has only one cooling fan that restricts (throttles) the performance. Also, if you can stretch to the 16GB RAM upgrade it will help with performance in the future. However, if not possible, 8GB should suit your needs.

Awesome. Yeah I also upgraded the Ram from 4x2GB to 4X8GB for $200 in 2021 but that hasn't solved the crawling issue. Also I get this weird lag when I open a window and try to move it, I'll see an echo or drag of the window so that it's not readable. It's random too. Sometimes sluggish for a day or other times just an hour yet I haven't done anything different with computer.

- So as you recommended, I checked disk utility and it said no errors. I took a look at the intego link and also ran through the troubleshooting and checked apple diagnostics hardware test and also no issues. when I look at CPU I have 93% idol, like I said 32GB memory and only using 6.51GB, storage im using 25Gb and 975GB are free... I'm just not sure what the issue is.

I was wondering about the difference between the two 8GPU vs 7GPU and didn't realize the cooling fan would make a difference. thanks!

Yesterday I ended up winning a bid on Ebay for an Apple iMac 24" (512GB SSD, M1, 3.20GHz, 16GB, 8-Core GPU) for $1100us. thanks again for your advice!

That’s great and hope you are happy with the purchase. Planning on getting one myself fairly soon (or possibly a 14” MacBook Pro.
