What Sony DSLR to upgrade to?

    Hi guys,

    I own a Sony A100 and think about upgrading. I could spend up to $2000 but I don't want to waste money of course. So I created a poll with 6 questions to see what people in general recommend for a hobbyist. I shoot only simple stuff just for fun. Hiking, climbing, family, sight seeing and such. No difficult stuff like sports or high quality portraits or architecture.

    Please vote here and lets see what we get!


    Please comment in this thread about you choices. And yes, no poll is perfect and it's not a scientifically sound poll.

    Get a 5D then you can shoot 1080p HD video with whatever lenses you like.

    hm, costs a lot more than i wanted to spend. any lens? how does that work?:confused:

    but taking videos in HD with a telezoom sounds tempting. do you have any review on that one?

    I'm just curious... is there something that you're doing that warrants an upgrade? If there's no need to upgrade, don't! :)

    Why not just buy some expensive class then?
    Upgrading camera won't do much to your photos, a nice f2.8 zoom might...

    Why isn't the a100 sufficient for those needs?
    Better glass would be far a better choice IMO.

    well, my A100 might die soon. dropped it.:mad:

    anyway, in the poll most people recommend the A700, in the posts many say "buy a cheap body and good glass". sounds more reasonable to me.

    Excellent advice, parent poster wants to upgrade upwards within the SONY ecosystem and you suggest a camera that needs different lenses and costs more.

    I know this is outside of normal etiquette, but I have a hardly-used A700 I'm selling. To be polite I won't go into detail, but if you're interested toss me a message.

    I upgraded from the 100 to the 700 and the difference was night and day.

    just cuz the newer it is and bigger badder stuff it has doesnt make it the best

    i suggest a A200 or 300 or 350

    you can still use your old lens and stuff from your A100 as usual, not only that you'll get a pretty decent upgrade for the price of your money and the left over cash can be used to by more accessories like lens and stuff

    I'd go for the A700. That is a really awesome camera, and after some tweaking of the image settings, you'll get some fantastic JPEGs out of it. If I were interested in a Sony DSLR, that's definitely the one I'd get, without question.

    Then why are you selling?
