My Girlfriends mom needs a smart phone or tablet that is cheap so she can browse the web and facebook for example. Anything people would say is worth getting?

price is around £50-£70 really.

Get the used iPhone 5 or 5s or new 5c with iOS 7.x / 8.x and mint condition. With light usage, you wouldn't have much problem with the battery.

I’ve seen an iphone 4 for £56 and for her usage that might be the best bet

A Linx 8 is a decently competent Windows tablet. I used one up till I got my SP4 ☺ (must sell it now, actually)

The kids have 7" Asus tablets and they work great.

A used one of either would work grand.

I rocking on 2015 Moto G, 2015 Moto E, Asus Zenfone 2 (with CM 12.1, without all these bloatware), Huawei P8 and finally Xiaomi Mi4C. If you ask me which one I like most, I would say Moto G. If you have little bit extra money, Moto X Play is great option.

By the way, I am running CM 13 on first generation Moto E, it beats iPhone 4S. For people who recommended iPhone 4S at these day of age, they should try iPhone 4S with iOS 9. It simply does not work. At least first generation Moto G runs Android Mashmellow like charm.

Microsoft lumia 635 or 640 super cheap and much less than 70 if you search online and its promised the new Windows OS when it updates

I think the Amazon Fire tablets are good for $50. I don't know if there are any reputable companies that have new tablets going for under $50.

The only issue is that the cheap 50 dollar ones are sold out for the rest of the holidays since it was a 35 dollar Black Friday deal. That means the lowest suitable tablet would be the 79.99 fire tablet with HD screen.

I think the Fire is available in BestBuy for store pick up (it's now $50 on both Amazon and BB..)
Not sure if it will ever go back to $35 - they've had their sales through Black Friday and I don't think they will lower the price before Christmas.

EDIT:
I see the OP is from the UK. Not sure what the BB equivalent is over there.

Old Moto E or old Moto G. I got a current gen Moto E for $10 on Black Friday and I was pleasantly surprised with its performance and the overall package it provides.

Lumia 640 has a good rear and front facing camera if your gf likes to take selfies :)

Wow thats cheap.

I bought someone a used but mint tesco hudl 2 for exactly what you describe for £80 and it's great for what they need it for.

It's a shame the Hudl line has been discontinued. It was an excellent budget tablet option.

Cheers yeah think it's the best option

The 4S is tiny! Unless the person actually needs the device as a phone, I'd strongly suggest going for a mini tablet due to significantly larger screen size and hence more comfortable browsing/facebooking/email etc.

The Fire and Fire HD 6 are both in stock on Amazon UK and within the OPs budget.
They might also be available from places like John Lewis, Currys, Tesco, and Argos.

The person in question only really needs it for Facebook and what's app it appears . So I think phone might be the best option.
