The only thing I can think of that happened that I didn't expect was the dual core processor. I knew it would get a bump but this surprised me a bit. Other than that, it seems like most of the rumors were true...

Seeing Steve there and looking pretty decent.
The Dual core, I was only expecting the A5 or even just a faster A4.

Other then that, not much. The rumors for the most part took care of everything else, i.e., thinner, lighter etc.

Avalable in white.

Only 1 ghz dual core. I really expected 1.2

But the one that took the cake, 1080P HDMI output. 720P wouldn't have surprised me, but 1080P sure did.

Lack of a light peak port.

The continued absence of I/O services, like USB, Thunderbolt, SD card seem consistent with the strategy that iOS devices are ancillary, not a competitor, to a personal computer.

I really didn't see the rear facing camera coming. I still think it would be weird to hold up an iPad to take a picture/video

I think it's going to be weird doing Facetime with device that might be in your lap or on a knee, looking upwards. I suppose some users will get a bicep workout holding it up at arm's length. 😎

The rear camera is logical for apps like Red Laser or Google
