What the best software to get for spyware removal?

Did anyone knock on wood? I have been using Macs for about twenty years now and have not had any problems not of my own making (downloaded a bad program about fifteen years or so ago and learned my lesson). But simply because it doesn't happen, doesn't mean it can't or won't. So I keep my fingers crossed that Apple stays small enough that the bad guys don't feel it's worth the effort.

I have no antivirus or spyware removal. Yet, I'm hearing rumors that even though I may not get infected, I may infect friends or relatives who do use P.C.s. Any truth to that rumor and is there a way to reduce the risk of being a typhoid-Mary-type of carrier?
