What the Heck Happened?

I had been using the phone for about an hour or so beforehand just messing around. Screen would only restore when using a swipe motion but single point of contact still worked after the screen had come back, obviously with a lot of flickering involved. Also had the apple restore progress bar or loading bar permanently visible. Battery was fine, can't think of any thing else really.

I just did a factory reset and that fixed the problem. Still what the heck caused that?

Looks like a hardware issue. Take it to Apple.

I'm assuming Verizon is an acceptable alternative.

It also repeated the problem after a factory reset. It was fine until it got turned off, as soon as it got turned back on the flickering returned.

I saw similar flickering on my att iphone 5. but it was only once, very brief, and I can't repeat it.

I'd imagine so. They'll replace it on the spot, assuming they have some in stock.
