So, I just got Warhammer 40k Space Marine. Thank gods it's not for Windows Live cause I got Dawn of War 2, had to make like 3 different accounts and it STILL doesn't work because I was stupid enough to be honest about my age. Ungh. Alrighty, so I got Warhammer 40k Space Marine in a real disc copy. I put in the first disk (has several gigabytes of stuff on it!) and all it does it prompt me to download it from steam which would take eons with my connection out here on the island. What is this? Should I have juts bought it from steam and started weeping, or lol, is there a way to manually get it to start installing the game FROM the disk like it's supposed to?

I'd really appreciate a reply, thanks

Check the Steam forums, I'm sure there is a step by step guide on how to use the game disk files with the steam install to minimize download to patch only.

Just an uneducated guess, but you could try disconnecting from the internet before installing. I imagine that the files would be installed from the disk and when you reconnected to the internet then the update should just be the newer files you need for updating.

It says "downloading" but it's really pulling files off the disc.

Alright, thanks a lot guys. I don't think it's just installing off the disk because it's taking an unnaturally large amount of time. I'll check my steam settings, and if I can't find anything, I'll just disconnect from the internet before installing, then open steam in order to patch it. Thanks a lot for the help!

Normally, launch installer from disk which will open Steam and install from disk.

If disk install is not working, you need to select "offline mode" first.

Uh... ...I insert the disk and all the options that I can click to install, on both disks 1 and 2, open steam. If i try to run in offline mode by turning off my internet and such it just says steam cannot connect. I can't believe that if you get the DVD version they still have you download from Steam. What the hell is this? ********ism extreme to the max. Steam is hell.

Try putting steam into offline mode and then seeing if it will install or if it still tries to make you connect.

It always tries to make me connect. I can't figure out a way, so I'm wondering if it'd just be better to install online and be cheated. God damn steam, not my friend at all. And that P.O.S windows live, windows makes me unhappy heheh. Now I see what they mean.

What should happen is it will connect to Steam - activate your product and then look like a steam downloader will begin installing the game. However it goes so fast that it's actually installing from Disc and not online. What will happen is after its fished reading from the disc it will continue to download and patch if there are any available updates.

Quite a few games install like this nowadays such as FEAR3 etc...

Naw, that's not how it happened when I tried from the disk. I inserted the disk and all, and then it started to download the game at my terrible internet download speed. Now I'm at the public library where there's like 5mb/s download, so I'll be good in less than half an hour.

A similar thing happened with me and Left 4 Dead 2, I had the disc which I stumbled upon and decided to install it but apparently it had a mind of its own and took several hours to become playable.

It was a pretty ridiculous experience.

The Emperor wept in his golden throne when Steam came along. No longer could his space marines defend the Imperium of Man. Not at least until they updated the **** out of themselves and spent a few days reaching their destination on Ellery's harddrive

Man, I can't wait for this game to arrive in the mail. The whole over-the-top violence, apocalyptic space settings and gruff British accents evoke the 2000 AD comics that I used to read. Maybe the same developer should talk to Rebellion about doing A.B.C. Warriors or Nemesis games. One can dream...

It does not seem like a game I would want to play on the computer but I guess for those that prefer it that way it comes down to the graphics hardware available and a preference for mouse and keyboard.
