I Honestly have no idea what you’re talking about.

So You’re complaining that five years of iOS updates shouldn’t be an option because your iPhone 5s slowed down due to iOS 11? How long are you expecting iOS support for a five-year-old phone before it slows down.
Yes, I have right to complain that Apple made 5s, Apple sale it to me, Apple forces my 5s to update and now my 5s stuck on iOS 11 and I don't have the option to downgrade.

To be honest, I've had a negative experience every single time I've done a major iOS upgrade on any of my devices. Initially they're ok, but over time they slow to a crawl. I recently upgraded an iPhone 6 to iOS 11 (all the way from 8!) and after a week it's barely tolerable. I wouldn't bother with any slower devices.

Ideally I'd say "never upgrade". But not upgrading isn't really an option any more:
  • If you use any apps that connect to cloud/web services, that cloud/service provider typically only supports a few recent app versions.
  • If you update the app to make sure you can still connect, you often need to upgrade your iOS as app developers only support a few recent iOS versions.
  • If you update your iOS so you can update the app, your device becomes slow, so you need a new one.
If you only use standalone apps (such as games) that might not have any cloud functionality, then you're fine. You can continue on with your launch iOS version and current app version and performance will be fine. ....except you need security updates anyway, and Apple typically only releases these for the current and previous(?) major iOS version.

How did Apple force your 5s to update to iOS 11?

Oh come on guy. The update comes up, sometimes with just a popup, you say "not now", they nag you until you push install, you install, you regret your decision, Apple doesn't let you return because they stop permitting downgrades.

This is not new, and asking that is offensive on this board.

Feel free to complain, But please indicate how Apple ‘forced’ you upgrade? Specifically how? Is the term “Forced” somewhere under the user agreement that you obligated too?

And:

You still didn’t answer this question:

How long are you expecting iOS support for a five-year-old phone before it slows down.

I personally (or my s.o.) never had a phone update with an unwanted release, nor wake up in the morning and find an unwanted release has updated. The only time I ever regretted an upgrade was iOS 8. Other than that I’m good with the various releases.

Just because it's 5 years old doesn't mean it has to be performing badly. That said, it's iOS 11. At least it's better than 4 and 4s.

If you want to you could get it checked out at Apple.

You mean the iPhone 5S is Two to three times Faster than iPhone 4S in iOS 9/ iPhone 4 in iOS 7? But sadly iPhone 5S it's like five Times slower than iPhone 5 on iOS 10 and five times better (less buggy, less crash) than iPhone 5S in iOS 11 on it's Last update.

i can't imagine even 5s has 64 bit it still became a lot slower than iPhone 5 which died in peace, but 5s almost die in suffering. just like 4/4s.

It’s a 5 year old phone trying to run 6 month old software, that’s what’s “wrong”
Not really wanting to start a debate, but I always wonder why that very costly (to us consumers) business model is so widely accepted without question in the smartphone world. I have a couple 2008 model laptops that happily run 2018 Windows 10 as well (actually, better) than they ever ran Windows XP.

Full disclosure.... I am really an Android guy at heart but I have switched to an iPhone 7 and an SE. Partly because Apple supports older phones a lot longer than Android does.

No he is saying that if IOS11 doesn’t work well on a 5s iPhone ( which I might
add they were selling brand new in the stores 2 years ago) they should put
some kind of software block so the iPhone can’t install the iOS - or barring that
A way to go back to an iOS that is compatible with the iPhone.

instead of a snarky answer you might try to first help People out.

They do block older macs from swallowing the newest OS. Why not iPhones too.

they should put some kind of software block so the iPhone can’t install the iOS -.

That’s a horrible decision. (I would also suggest you read the licensing agreements behind iOS to Have a better understanding of what the user agrees too.) Per your suggestion, NOT upgrading the software, you leave your device wide open for any other malicious activity like Spectre or meltdown.

No he is saying that if IOS11 doesn’t work well on a 5s iPhone.

For the record in this discussion, the OP stated Apple/iOS forces their 5s to upgrade, that is patently false.

I fully understood what the OP was saying. The question still stands that’s been posed by others in this thread, would somebody expect a five year old iPhone to have six month old iOS not have any performance issues at all? That’s not very logical.

That’s a horrible suggestion and Apple would never allow it for safeguarding reasons. (See below quote you’re referring too). First, you are incorrect, there is no real helping in this situation, even more based on the OP’s replies given their defensive stance.

Also, Not even close to being snarky in my below post. I asked two questions that were completely legitimate to provoke discussion regarding the OP’s thought process, which not every post has to have precise answers to the OP’s concerns question. I suggest you reread through this thread to see the various responses, as I think your interpretation of ‘snarky’ is misconstrued.

Hardware limitation same as 6 on iOS 11 because those devices only have 1GB RAM. You should be lucky Apple even support 5S than letting it become ancient like the 4/4S. Apple doesn't "force" anyone to update but the device would keep nagging you there is an update available. As such, by using Apple product, you already agreed to their terms and conditions that Apple make future iOS software available for newer devices or other models. If you wanted to stay on iOS 10, you should've picked a 4S. There are SE available on eBay around the same price as the 5S and resell your 5S to get that much needed upgrade. I don't see most Android having that kind of support unless you unlocked the bootloader for custom OS support.

Since iOS 12 won't be supported for any A7 Devices. I really hope there is an iPhone SE 2, But they should have got rid of the 4 Inch display. Or they could make at least an 4.3 or 4.5" screen similar to design of an iPhone X which is bezel less. 4 inch is really cramped in my opinion. People eyesight nowadays is worse and worse..by getting nearsighted or farsighted because of non stop looking at nearby objects...

Only buy an iPhone if you can afford the below:

iOS 12 - iPhone 8 or newer

iOS 10/11 - iPhone 6s or SE

iOS 9 - iPhone 6

iOS 8 - iPhone 5
