I would actually would wake up at least 20 to 25 minutes early. It's hard to say how the servers will respond to this much activity.
I guess you are right. I don't want to be sleepy and make a mental error during the madness.
I'm counting on the IUP preapproval to get me through quickly. I'm going to get up about 10 minutes early and go sit next to my router with my phone. Then open, close, open repeat as required until it pops up.

Depends on how and where you are ordering.
From your phone on the app and in bed and you're going back to sleep? Then 2:50 - 2:55 is probably fine. If you need to order from a computer, in another room and/or leave not to disturb a SO, then a few more minutes might be necessary.
I'm ordering from in bed, on the phone and hopefully going right back to bed. That's if there isn't too much adrenaline pumping through me. I'm getting up at 2:50 EDT.

I suggest 15 mins early. There have been those odd times where the preorders go live 5-10 mins early.

This will be the biggest ever iPhone launch. Tens of millions of people are going to be trying to win the iPhone X lottery. I hope all of us MR members will get what we deserve, because we are the most loyal and passionate Apple customers.
