@TSX- Wouldn't you have to pay an ETF if you add a line and then cancel a line? I can't imagine them letting you add a line just to get a subsidized phone and then being able to cancel the line without penalty.

So, what if I spring for the partially subsidized upgrade now ($399 for a 16GB 3GS, for example)? Where will I be in terms of upgrade eligibility, assuming there's an all-new iPhone next year?

My plan is currently under the $99 threshold.

Thanks Dave. Perhaps I was given incorrect information by AT&T then about my FAN discount bringing me down below $99?

I have an individual plan.

$60 for 900 minutes
$30 iPhone data
$15 for 1500 texts
------------------
$105
-19% discount (applies to voice & data only - not text plan)
------------------
$88 before taxes

So are you saying that they don't count texts as data then? It's either texts or my FAN discount that is disqualifying me. I have to imagine my plan + features is the most popular package out there for iPhone users, so I'm just trying to understand what exactly is counted toward the $99 and what isn't. AT&T doesn't seem to know themselves.

And yes, I understand that the $17/month in discounts I've been receiving has already made up for my subsidy. I just want to know what is keeping me from being eligible - text plans not counting or FAN discount?

Thanks!
Correct the $15 SMS Txt plan is not a data plan or data feature. I keep saying "data feature" because the iPhone data plans are really a "Feature" in the AT&T System.

Yes, it is very confusing. Also, AT&T does not consider any SMS Txt plans as "Data", sorry. That is what is keeping you below the magic "greater than $99 per month on a 3 month rolling MRC.

If you get the "Early Upgrade" you will be using your subsidy and have a brand new two year commitment. Yes, even with paying the extra $200 you still are using your handset subsidy on the iPhone 3GS. Next year you can expect to be at best offered and "Early Upgrade" again for the next iPhone X.

Since your stated that you were below the "Greater then $99 clip" you can expect a full subsidy upgrade in 18-23 months from your new contract activation date on the iPhone 3GS. :(

Sorry but those are the facts.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but just wanted to add that I went ahead and added the $9.99 navigation to my plan. Theoretically this may take my MRC up to $99.98, so I'm going to wait for a few months' billing with it like this and see if it changes my upgrade eligibility date. I am looking at this as a year long experiment to see what exactly changes the upgrade eligibility.

For what its worth, I did an early upgrade to get the iPhone 3G back in January of 2009 and it cost me $400 at Best Buy. In June I was able to get the 3G S for $200. Actually, I "qualified" for a new 2 year price at the end of April but I waited until June for the 3G S. Also, I am eligible for the next 2 year upgrade price on June 19th, 2010. Explain that?

Well regardless of whether they have the July-Aug-Sept deal again, I am hoping that I can change my eligibility date to June 30th 2010 instead of Dec. 2010 (12 month instead of 18 month).

Is it really worth it to add $120 in fees over the next year for a service you don't really want to save your $80 on the new iphone next year?

Well, probably, yes. That's a big chunk of change to have to pay $500 all at once for the new phone. $300 would be much more manageable. This year I felt like I could have gone out and bought a nice laptop for what I paid for the phone, lol.

true.
I also paid the early upgrade price for 2 3gs'.
But selling our 3G's covered most of the cost of upgrading, so it wasn't so bad.

My bill is over $100 a month ($170 family plan with 4 lines). I got the 3GS on June 19th, and checking my upgrade eligibility right now it says I am eligible on June 19th 2010.

family plan main lines are on a 1 year upgrade track.
