Sorry to hear this happened to you... hope it works out.

The lesson here, folks, is to never take ANYTHING but CASH when you sell something via Craigslist. DON'T ship anything (even if the buyer is paying for the shipping), DON'T take money orders or cashier's checks, DON'T use Western Union. "Cash on the barrelhead" is the rule you should stick to.

If the buyer can't do it any other way but by cashier's check, arrange to meet them at your bank and have the folks at the bank verify that the check is good BEFORE you hand over the merchandise. An honest buyer will not mind doing this; a scammer will NOT do this. When I sold my PowerBook through Craigslist, the buyer drove 3 hours from Fayetteville to Charlotte, because there was NO WAY I was going to ship it... when they got here, I showed them that the machine was fully as-described, and they waited patiently while I counted through the money they gave me to make sure there were no counterfeit bills. Honest people don't mind a few minutes extra verification to make sure no one's getting screwed.

Some people really suck! I am sorry for your loss.

These scams have become way to common. I would seriously be surprised if that was a legit phone number. Almost all of these bogus money order/cashiers checks are from foreign countries.

I will never do business with anyone outside the states on ebay. When it comes to Craigslist, which is more fraudulent it has to be in person only.

But these thieves are getting smarter, so I would have most likely fallen prey too.

Once again sorry for your loss.

I'll tell you right now if it is in the US, the police don't care and if it outside the US it is laughable thinking anything can be done about it.

All I can say

is this is very depressing. Its so sad to have your view of humanity lowered. I wonder, if there any hope for me doing something along the lines of what that guy did to get his tmobile sidekick back? or is that already done to death. could I call apple and get the serial number of the laptop, since im sure it is still registered to me? also, i can get the macaddress since my school made me register it in order to get wireless access? any hope? PS on a side note, I got a provate investigator, who is looking into the phone numbers. the second number I added today, is linked to "the city of pomona" so.... sounds very bogus, like a generic city number or something

CALL THE POLICE, i linked to the city of Pomona PD and their phone number in an early post. Not meaning to be rude here but stop sulking and call them already, counterfeiting is not something they will take lightly, and having a name and phone numbers would be help to finding them.

Hey Ed, I am going to call the police, but I have to wait for teh actual check to be returned to me, which should be sometime this week. (so says the bank). now my questions is still there thoguh, do you think If I have the computer serial number and mac adddress anything can actually be done to find it, who do you goto for that type fo thing? that doesnt sound like waht the police do, sounds more like the FBI, but I dont think they will got that high over $2300.

Report it to the police, if they need to they will get other agencies involved. Getting it properly documented is the first step :) On another note if you have renter/homeowners insurance or if you are living with parents and they do it would most likely cover something like this since now it has become a theft.

update

the numbers ai was given, well one wa registered to the city of pomona, the other is registered to a prepaid cell phone number, so, those are screwed, i am filing a police report this coming week, and apple will be in contact with the police. hopefully I get the macbook back, if not the cash

craigslist is really iffy, It's even less regulated than ebay. That said, I have successfully sold some expensive stuff on it. I sold an old fishing boat for $1500 and I made it clear to the guy before he even came out that I would take nothing other than cash. I even went as far as buying a counterfeit testing marker and checking every bill he gave me.

definitly let this be a lesson on what not to do. i got the chec back today, and it is indeed counterfit. on the one had, im really kicking myself, becuase i got screwed out of 3 months worth or rent, on the other hand, whern i look at it now, the damn thing is perfect. so, i feel at least i got tricked by a really good fake. makes me feel less stupid
