what to do first, with a brand new macbook?

After the welcome screen and setup, very first thing you should do is click on the System Preferences icon in the dock and then after it loads click on the "Trackpad" icon.

Watch all those videos and familiarize yourself with the hand gestures and remember to keep coming back to that screen to modify your options and make it comfortable. The multi-touch trackpad makes everything faster and easier. You will be using some of those multi-touch gestures all the time!

guilty... i didn't want to remove the wrap. then, i figured out its prolly MORE fun when i actually use it
 
Really, though, make sure the trackpad is functioning properly. It's new technology, so you have to become familiar with how it's supposed to work. When you tap it, does it make a tinny noise and feel loose or squishy? Mine came like this and it took me months to figure out that this could be fixed. Others complain that clicking it down is difficult and loud, but that's not how it's supposed to be either. Both these problems can be remedied by adjusting a small screw behind the trackpad that you can access by removing the battery.

the trackpad is really useful, way different than coming from windows....

the video was the most helpful
 
go to system pref. and create another user account for any other users who might be using your terminal. Enable fast user switching to if you wish. It keeps things clean and tidy!! Also it is a good idea to utilize file vault during those times when you might want maximum security (in case your mac might get stolen!). Get to know spaces and spotlight!!!!

fan/temp software

Throughout the forum, I've been reading about fan speed and heat measurements. Is there a program that comes with the Macbook already that does this? Tomorrow will be the end month one of being an Apple owner!

i don't think there is a default app, but i did download iStat. iStat works great.
