Sorry to hear bout your phone! Today I dropped my iPhone 4 about 3 feet onto hard laminate flooring, without any sort of case. Landed on the bottom and then flipped over on to the screen All I had was a bestskinsever body shield on the back and sides. Not a single scratch anywhere on the phone. Guess I lucked out! Scared the hell out of me, so I can't wait to get one of the screen protectors.

stickers

lots of stickers.

if you they question you. Say "because I love stickers MAN!!!!"

wait... really, is no one going to acknowledge how awesome this answer is?

But really it IS your best bet... buy one of the decals like this http://www.talkietech.com/apple-iphone-4-skin-10705.html that cover the whole back up and wait for a few weeks/months for companies to catch up and the price of replacement backs to come down.

I don't know if I really trust myself to do that... and how do we know that eBay auction is legit? could easily be a knockoff.

Tell Apple it fell while you were holding it the way Steve said to

I think a skin, gel or silicone is a must for these BTW.

rich tells me he's bought things like that off eBay before, and they are rarely if ever original/quality parts. just to be safe I'm going to do this through him.

is replacing the back glass really that easy? anyone got a guide?

Can you not be bothered to do any research on your own? I mean come on, the 30 sec it took you to ask if there is a guide you could have type in a query on google and found one. I'm all for helping others out but You gotta be willing to help yourself.

I love all the people who don't take care of their phone and blame Apple for the phone glass breaking.

The answer to the question is very simple. Pay your $199 replacement fee and don't drop your phone on CONCRETE next time and expect GLASS to survive the fall.

first of all, I did search and rephrased it about 5 different ways but couldn't find anything. maybe I'm just challenged when it comes to that... you don't have to help me if you don't want, I'll figure it out eventually.

and - yeah, it was an accident. it happens. I'm sure you've had plenty of them just like everyone else. but i think it's a little ridiculous that my phone just shatters when it falls no more than 2 feet (and doesn't even TOUCH the concrete) while it's inside apple's own case that claims to protect from drops. this is definitely the most fragile phone I have ever had.

wow dude really? come on try searching on your own , took me all of 10 seconds to find a replacemnt back on ebay, and its only $20 , best of luck :)

That's JUST the glass, I believe the glass is glued to a panel with tabs and what not

Like so...

Just a little FYI, My sister's friend dropped her iphone 4 and cracked the back panel. Ebay currently has half of China selling OEM glass back panels (without the 16 and 32 gig labels on them) for about $9 bucks which sounds like a deal and really is... the only problem with this is that it's JUST THE GLASS PANEL and not the Plastic Panel that is attached to the Glass panel. I took the back panel off only to find that the glass is attached to the back panel with ADHESIVE. The plastic frame panel is attached to the glass panel along with some metal striping and other layers of film. I personally think you're going to need a lot of heat to detach the cracked glass from the back frame panel.

oh and another observation:

See the two little holes on the back panel that houses the camera ring and the LED flash? The are permanently glued onto the glass which means they don't come off the glass which means no silver ring and no optical flash extension/dispersing.

The $9-$20 glass panels on ebay and fix-it sites are a no go so don't waste your money on them. I have one and can't use it.

Now that's good to know. I think most of us figured $10-$20 was too good to be true, thanks for explaining exactly why. Should stop a few from wasting their money on junk.
