Before Lion, I used the bounce feature in mail, but now that that's gone, I just delete it.

Me too. When it highlights, it opens.

But that problem has been solved by r.j.s.post - just right click and then delete. When you right click, it doesn't open the email. :)

Same here, left click opens it and right click doesn't. I'm on 10.6 so I think that's the old version.

What is the best thing to do if you get a spam email to ensure I don't get a virus or anything.

Don't click any attachments or any links within the email; delete it.

I don't see why people are so scared of opening spam, nothing bad will happen unless the email is somehow able to exploit your client, or your client automatically downloads attachments when opening an email (which makes no sense).

Is it really that simple  Ive been getting these the past few days, and was hoping for something other than "delete them."

What answer would you like? If there was a way to completely get rid of spam, then there wouldn't be any more spam.

Actually I had this issue a while back. Forgot how I fixed it. I had a question about it here in the forums and I thought it was a thread I started but I couldn't find it so maybe it was a post.

Anywho, check out these sites for help:

Emails can only harm your computer if you open an attachment. The actual email is harmless. But even with attachments... Most of them only target Windows computers.

Just delete spam without opening any attachments. Don't worry if you open the message, just don't open any attachments. Don't ever reply to spam, such as clicking "unsubscribe" or any other links in spam messages, as this could serve only to verify to the spammer that your email address is active and in use.

You can't get a virus on your Mac by opening emails. Macs are not immune to malware, but no true viruses exist in the wild that can run on Mac OS X, and there never have been any since it was released 10 years ago. The only malware in the wild that can affect Mac OS X is a handful of trojans, which can be easily avoided with some basic education, common sense and care in what software you install. Also, Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Lion have anti-malware protection built in, further reducing the need for 3rd party antivirus apps.

Maybe some have better luck than others but I am happy with how Mail handles spam. I get quite a bit of spam since I have a very old email address--been using it for over 10 years. I routinely have 150 emails in the junk folder which are automatically deleted. I guess your luck with Mail handling this will vary but for me, it works just fine. :)
