Hi,

I have a 2017 Macbook Air bought this year, brand new from the factory. Once, my brother used brandy not isopropyl alcohol to clean the trackpad and body because of COVID-19, as I let him borrow my Macbook. But because it was not isopropyl alcohol, the brandy ate the finish of the trackpad and body where you put your wrists. I got in touch with Apple and they told me to make an appointment with the Genius Bar, but every Apple store in my city has no reservations available for any day, only one third party store is available and they don’t allow you to come there, they expect you to drop off the Macbook and pick it up which I don’t want to do. I have a genuine replacement trackpad ready to replace the damaged one, the only problem is the finish on the body which makes it very uncomfortable to use, but no Genius bar appointments are available. So what should I do? My hands are always covered in some type of alcohol as we use that to disinfect our hands. It’s a cultural thing, from my culture it’s normal to use alcohol for everything. Seeing as no appointments are available, should I buy a new Macbook and then wash my hands with water every time I want to use it? Or use gloves? Even a single drop of brandy seems to damage it. I suspect that the brandy contains some type of impurity as it’s moonshine made by my family.

You can cover the top case using a vinyl skin. Over time, the skin would get degraded from contact with alcohol, but they are relatively inexpensive to replace.

You could also go for a product like this
(which, again, would need periodic replacement.)

Moving forward, 70 percent IPA is the way to go, but I would avoid brandy as it can be very acidic, and this can (as you have discovered) rapidly damage finishes.

I previously used a higher concentration. I started using 70 percent based on Apple's recommendation and my recent understanding that 70 percent IPA is more effective at disinfecting than extremely high concentrations due to the water functioning as a catalyst and prolonging contact times.

Is the higher concentration better for the device?
