I recycled my Mac mini 2010 a couple of years ago. It wasn't broken but playback of 1080p video either at higher bitrates or with HEVC encoded content started skipping.
It had a fast SSD in it with plenty of free space so that wasn't the issue. I even wiped the drive clean and went back to Sierra (and turned off all cloud services). Still it was unacceptable as a home theater device.
I replaced it a Mac mini 2018 for desktop computing use and a $60 Raspberry Pi 4 as a home theater playback device (running Kodi).
Admittedly I zero interest in hoarding old computers. Life is too short to spend much time on system administration even on Macs running discontinued operating systems.
I realize I could have made a few bucks on eBay/Craigslist/etc. but I have no interest in dealing with that.
