I bought a 15" MBP in 2016 like a moron. I have hated it since I got it but I had given my 2012 retina MBP away and figured Apple was moving away from ports. It took a year for my keyboard woes to set in. Also, it had a nasty habit of developing screen surface issues where imprints of the trackpad and keyboard would wear into the screen. I took it into the Apple store (45 minutes away so believe it has to be a big deal if I do so) and they insisted that I was mishandling the keys or squishing the screen. My computer sits on a desk and hardly ever gets closed. Being such an expensive machine I dealt with it until the 2020 MBA came out. Being that it could finally drive a 4K screen I just used a 27" monitor. The larger screen is the main reason I was buying MBP's. For the last year I have been using the 2016 MBP as a file server. I came home last week and discovered that the battery had swollen roughly 50%. It's popping a wheelie on my desk, can't close, and the keyboard is curved with most keys not working.

I know this thing is out of warranty and I hate it so very much that I am tempted to just throw it away. I'm tempted to take it to the store but am not willing to put any money into it. They may offer to give a new battery, but I question what the point would be other than to try to sell it. I would love for Apple to just recycle and give me whatever they would spend to put a battery in it and give me App Store credit, but I find that very unlikely. Any suggestions on how I should approach this with Apple?

dismantle it and sell the individual parts. check out this video. you can often make more money this way.
