Ok, I am going to purchase my first mac in a couple of days. I am mainly looking for Macbook air 2012 with 8gb ram and 128 gb ssd and it will cost me $1269 after student discount.
The second model I am looking for is Macbook pro 15 base model (4gigs ram, 500gb hdd and nvidia gt 650m 550 mb) (refurb) and that will cost me $1549.

I am mainly attracted to air because of its portability but at the same time I am wondering that I can get a much powerful computer for $250 more.

I mainly use computer for browsing, office and movies. Occasionally I do record some music (guitar only, just for fun) and do some photo editing (again its just a hobby). Sometimes I take my computer to college but mostly I carry my IPad.

What should be a better buy?

I would personally go for the 15" Macbook Pro.

Not only do you get more storage with the 500GB hard drive vs the 128GB SSD, you also get a more powerful computer with a larger display. I'm assuming of course you'd go for the 13" Macbook Air.

Granted the Macbook Pro won't be nearly as light as the Macbook Air, but you have an iPad for class, and it's not like the 15" Macbook Pro is extremely heavy either. I've been bringing my 17" Macbook Pro to class every day so far this semester, and even that isn't too heavy.

In short, I personally would go for the Macbook Pro since I'm a sucker for larger displays (hence the 17"), but whichever you choose, neither machine will disappoint.
