Make it work with my HUD. The native GPS will show me navigation instructions in the heads-up display but if I use Apple Maps, it only shows on the main display. But I still use Apple Maps anyway because it's so much better than the built-in system. Still....would be nice.
I think this must be dependent on the car. Mine shows heads up display for Apple or google maps through CarPlay in the same way as the native maps for the car.

Is the sound recognition feature very helpful?

I have tried it on idevices and home pods but didn’t find it reliable enough to be useful. Almost worse having an unreliable output than none at all. Also the “Maybe:” just reinforces this.

Make an option to get our regular notifications on our phone while in CarPlay.

Just update the original CarPlay and try to get the vehicles data into it. Especially the charge of the battery and the current power consumption to estimate reach within apps. Most often I use the subpar navigation of my car, just because it can reliably react in case I need to charge earlier than planned.

The one feature I want that they’ll never have is to show the text messages. in text form. large on the screen. so i at least know whether they’re worth listening to And not just a “yup”
Lawyers.

Apple have started to go against the very thing CarPlay was meant to do - provide a way to interact with the vehicle with minimal distractions. Look at Maps as an example, you have to tap the screen to get voice control up, tap a VERY small area to turn vote on or off and hope you get it first time.

If a pop up is required (which is NEVER should be) e.g. in harePlay for Music, it's tiny and in the centre of the screen.

CarPlay should be huge buttons that need one tap with most functionality not allowed unless it's voice or one button controlled. Allowing pizza apps goes against that - and promotes an unsafe driving habit.

Whoever is signing off these CarPlay changes in Apple should feel ashamed - and they should be moved elsewhere in the company.

Hoping that some of the features that will be announced will actually be released this year.

Hmm, carplay pops up fuel warnings for me, can click through for nav on Apple Maps..

Screens require you to look at them in order to use them. Sliders, buttons, switches, and knobs, once learned, do not. It would be nice if the UI people would remember that. Carplay is great for navigation, but I don't need it to take over things like climate control. It's less safe. Controlling the radio via screen is an abomination.
I use CarPlay for the music and apps availability. The last thing I need is it to interface with my car itself. The current crop of car computers are set up to do that job better than CarPlay will ever integrate with them.

I hope they can make the background darker. At night, my CarPlay "dark grey background" is so bright it's so distracting. I go back to my car's home screen and the background is pure black and does not glare my eyes.

The first beta of iOS 18 will likely be made available to members of the Apple Developer Program immediately following the WWDC keynote on June 10, and a public beta is usually released in July, which will allow iPhone users to test out the new CarPlay features.

Unless I am mistaken, the developer betas were open to everyone immediately following last year's WWDC. There was a lot of angry feedback from developers who paid to be in the program, which is understandable.

Not sure if that was a mistake Apple made or if moving forward, everyone will be able to access the same beta.

Until they get oled screens it will never be black black. I have noticed some car manufacturers screens don’t seem to dim at night. Mine dims to where it doesn’t bother me at all in my Honda but i also love my Honda cus it doesn’t limit CarPlay’s functionality while driving like I’ve seen in some manufacturers cars like chevy

That’s already possible but depends on the auto manufacturer

Some brands allow for this (Poletsar, BMW) already.

The iPhone’s built in sensors know when the car is moving or not. I think it would be neat if the interface can change just a little bit when it knows I’m not actually driving. Let me read my texts, or a news article. Maybe put on a video or game. Or just let me mirror my iPhone screen.

I have a big CarPlay display in my Chevy Bolt, if I’m waiting around in a parking lot for my friend or spouse, I’d like to use it for something.

I remember them making it only available to paid developers, then quickly backpedaled because of the backlash since downloading a profile was no longer a thing. I wasn’t planning on renewing my developer account, but did because that was the only way to get the beta at first.

You think that everyone will have a shot at the beta on day one like last year?

That seems to be a limitation of your car, Apple Maps integrates with the cockpit and hud on my bmw. Waze does not however.
This is the same for me my Chevy Truck. If I use Apple Maps, I get it on the main screen and the cockpit screen as well. The cockpit screen, is more simple, with the next turn. Problem is I pretty much can't stand Apple maps, and much prefer Google maps. When using Google maps I only get it on the main screen.

I assume it is Apple that is doing this. I also bet if I were to use Android Auto, it would work fine as well. Apple always looking out for the customer.

We’d never know for sure until WWDC, but I’d say there’s a good chance Apple won’t make the same mistake again that got a lot of people upset last year.

Yeah, they probably locked down the needed integration to themselves with 3rd party unable to tap into it. Common monopoly bs from apple.

Yeah, video play is a no brainer. Especially with EV’s becoming more common and the ridiculous charge wait times.

Screens require attention. But voice commands do not. “Set drivers seat temperature to 68°” or “increase windshield wiper speed”. You wouldn’t have to take even one hand off the wheel. Your eyes would remain on the road. it would be even better than using a knob or lever.

Exception being - carplay looking forward. Many cars already do a certain level of autonomy and more will do so going forward…

Screwing around with an interface while the car is ensuring safety even while hands off wheel is already a reality, and will filter down as tech usually does.
