I really don't care. I mostly read static text at more or less 0hz or watch videos at the common 30hz. Games usually don't play at more than 60fps. More than 60hz does make scrolling and UI-Animations slightly more fluid, but that's about it. For me, those animations are fluid enough, I can't read fast scrolling text at 60hz just as I can't read it at double that rate. I very much doubt that 95% of consumers will see the difference, even if they compare it side by side.
Ok you are right for average consumer. But a lot of people me included definitely see the difference. It's a real comfort while scrolling. Especially news/text based material for my case. It's not only for gaming. I even notice pretty easily the difference up to 180Hz. (My monitor is 240Hz). The is definitely diminishing return but 120hz is not luxury anymore. For gaming the difference is even more obvious.

My gf who is not a geek/gamer at all notice the difference instantly when she uses my phone instead of her iPhone 15 (60Hz) for instance. She did not know/care at all about refresh rate before realising the difference

Well yeah, I have a DSLR with a half-dozen lenses, but i can't fit that inside my pocket, can I buddy?
Yeah well that’s why an iPhone can be good for one cam but very rare that you would need a telephoto in the middle of the day… I guess…

Im a Mini fanboy also, but if they can give the 17e the same ultra slim bezels as the 15 Pro its pretty comfortable one handed. Right now the iPhone E line is the smallest in the line up and the best we can get after the Mini.
My wife has a 16e, and it’s roughly the same weight as a 17 Air. A likable iPhone. And it has iOS 18!

Getting magsafe and the dynamic island makes this a really good small phone option (IMO).
Just bought the 16e 256GB a month and a half ago, after postponing for months, when buyer's guide was at Neutral. Feeling a bit burned, but I guess that's what Apple wants me to feel. Objectively, the 16e is a far cry ahead my SE 1st gen which I still use, and not a bad phone by itself. MagSafe and dynamic islands are not exactly deal breakers.

I still wouldn't call it "small". It's far from being small, it sticks out of my pocket, but I suppose it is compared to iPad Mini-sized Max series.

If it has the same (or similar) battery size as the 16e, along with the processor from the 17, and the C1X modem, it could be another battery powerhouse...

I’m considering, $90 putting another battery into my iPhone 12 mini for the 2nd time, or getting an iPhone 13 mini off Craigslist in decent condition for $200. The thought of getting this 17e has arisen, but I really don’t want to get the bigger phone and reward them with $600, when they abandoned the mini concept. I don’t even really want a smart phone anymore - they have destroyed our society in a lot of ways - so maybe the $90 battery is the way to go.

An average person doesn’t give a crap though. They want a phone that just works and fits all their needs. That’s it.
That’s me included. While I know what’s a megapixel and gigabytes I honestly don’t care about MagSafe (my iPhone SE 2020 doesn’t have a MagSafe either although in all fairness it came out way before Magsafe but even so, I can live without Magsafe) and how many hertzs a particular display has. Just internal storage, camera quality and screen size are more important to me.
