I've been anticipating this for the iPhone 6. Brilliant work. Your work last year was phenomenal.

Ehem, you forgot something:

"I'd also like to thank my lovely wife for putting up with me while I obsessively research for weeks on end, and for being the coolest, most awesome person ever. In return for her gracious support I will give her massages every day for a week."

You know, or something... ;)

P.S. Love you. Great job.

Thanks for the fabulous post. I needed 2 cups of coffee to get through it. So well done.

Great post!
So if the storage compression from algotrim is real we could store 24gb of data on 16gb?
I have a personal idea about sapphire.... They have found a way to leave it possible... Maybe on the higher price model... Do you remember the rumours of container ps going from USA to China?
What do you think about the contrast and the brightness of 6's display on the video from feld &volk? This seems to me very much like my psvita (oled screen).... Or maybe they have found a way to make a local dimming
Thank you again for the analysis... Wonder why it is not on the front page of MR

I think this is a too optimistic.
Algotrim may help Apple with RAM compression, even though I'm not sure it is the best approach on a mobile device. They may help compressing the IPA files, maybe compress the images on camera roll to save space but what about assets downloaded by the apps?
I'm talking about images, videos, mp3 downloaded anche cached by apps on their sandbox.

24GB of data on a 16GB flash memory means 50% more space, it's really too much

Yeah.... I have supposed it is too much, but secretly I was hoping in a 96 gb version of iphone!:D
For the ram I think it will stay 1GB ( but in this case I really think we will have the same compression like OSX... Around 50% if I remember correctly federighi!)

Did the iphone5s with its dual 512MB ram have an indication on the package that it was 512 or 1G?

Also does the chip count seem to rule out a buffer in the screen?

chrmjenkins may answer your question better, but as far as I remember in A7 the silkscreen referenced to 1GB of ram, not 512MB

Why just a week? :p

Why do u have lower Gflops for the A8 than the A7?

Someone corrected my calculation on A7 and I forgot to update the A8.

We'll have to see on the compression. I am still skeptical of how well it works in a mobile environment so I'd like to see Apple address or hear a dev talk about it.

For the screen, I wouldn't try and judge it based on the video. Just wait and see if Apple brags about it, and if not, what DisplayMate has to say.

Yes. Since the A8 has been looked at, Hynix sent out an updated memory decoder that shows it is in fact a 2x32 bit channel 8Gb (1GB) memory.

Small update on WiFi. Broadcom just announced a new AC chip that is already in production and is going to ship in devices this quarter (Q3 2014). Makes it a pontential candidate for the iPhone and iPad. It should help with performance on crowded networks.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/8469/broadcom-announces-bcm4358-second-gen-2x2-80211ac-wifi

Today, Broadcom is announcing a new WiFi/BT combo chip that succeeds the BCM4354. According to Broadcom, the key features of this new chipset are enhanced WiFi/BT coexistence performance, integrated PA/LNA/TR switch, transmit beamforming and low density parity check codes, and angle of arrival direction finding technology. According to Dino Bekis, VP of mobile wireless connectivity, the biggest difference between this chipset and BCM4354 would be the improved coexistence performance.

This chipset is now in production and should make its way into mobile devices in Q3 2014.

ZDNet offers a little more detail that could indicate one potential use: http://www.zdnet.com/broadcom-doubling-its-mobile-wi-fi-speed-with-new-chip-7000033217/

The Irvine, Calif.-based company is also promising up to 50 percent better Bluetooth performance as well as higher location accuracy thanks to Round Trip Time (RTT) indoor location technology.

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2467151,00.asp

To that end, the BCM4358 is the first available to device makers which enables Angle-of-Arrival direction finding technology on a smartphone, according to Broadcom.

Wow, such low-level and thoughtful analysis is something I only hope to achieve at some point in my lifetime. Truly excellent work.

How would one go about attaining the background to get to this point? I feel like with Anand and Brian off at Apple, the easy way of just reading AnandTech may no longer be an option anymore.

Very detailed post.

Haven't read everything yet, but your a4 information is wrong.

Core count is 1 (not 2) and memory is 512mb (not 256mb) as per iphone 4. (Ipad 1 had 256mb)

Thanks. I had some kind of copy paste error after I changed the format slightly from last year.

Then it seems like 1gb is almost certain?

Long story short the editor is suggesting that the 2915 mAh battery is for the 4.7' version and the 1810 mAh battery for a revamped (6s?) version of the 5s...
He also suggests that the other bendable battery posted sometimes ago ( supposed bigger capacity) is for the 5,5'
He also states that the connector is not right for the 5s' board....
What do U think?

I see no reason to assume it is for the 4.7" over the 5.5". Just put a ruler next to it.

The connector not matching is no big deal since they'd no doubt do a motherboard revision anyway.

Oh yes.... The rulers are very cheap! C'mon leakers... In my opinion all those leaks are accurately made from apple in one way or another...

Chris,

Amazing work. Do you think the different packaging on the gyroscope suggests a new gyroscope provider? The quality of previous gyroscopes has always been a disappointment. Thanks...

Not only is the pad out missing, but we're also missing the M7 based on pad out. Some significant changes seem to be coming to the sensor systems, outside of the potential location of the barometer.
