Is it even technically feasible from a hardware standpoint that the 2017 MB would have a Thunderbolt 3 port? I have no idea so I'm asking. Thanks. (I'm referring to the Kaby Lake mobile processors. Of course anything is feasible)

I'm not an expert, nor do I have any inside info, so take it for what it is worth. But this is what I think sums up the situation:

For Thunderbolt, it either needs to be on-chip, or with a daughter card on the motherboard.

1. On-chip: from what I read, the next version of the processor used in the MacBook will NOT have thunderbolt on the chip die. Maybe the version after that will have it, I don't know.

Which brings us to:

2. Via an extra (daughter) card on the motherboard: this is how thunderbolt functionality is usually added to computers now, so I think if Apple wanted to do this they would've already done this. So I think it is unlikely that the next version will have thunderbolt added via a daughter card. This method also takes up valuable motherboard space (internal space is already at a premium inside the macbook, if you look at pictures of the motherboard it is tiny!) and also requires more battery.

If I add 1 + 2 my personal hunch is that it is unlikely that we will see thunderbolt 3 added to the macbook for the next revision.

I hope I am wrong and Apple does add it, though. I'd love to get a macbook + LG 5K so my wife can replace her 11" MacBook Air + Thunderbolt Display ;)

Thanks! Pretty much exactly the explanation I was looking for except for that part where you say it's unlike to be in the next MB. :)

Seems like there might be a press release tomorrow, maybe the 12" third generation will be updated.

If it is just a press release, then there won't be anything but minor updates. MB will get a processor, maybe a new color option, the SE might get more memory and maybe a new color option, likewise for the iPads. No reason to have a presentation.

Yea i know, but for someone like me who is considering the 12" MacBook (or the 13 MacBook Pro) it would be great for them to update so it can help me decide along with knowing that they have been updated for the year.

Really hoping on a MacBook update once the store is back up! I've been keeping track of the various threads about the CPUs in the last year, and it seems that the consensus is that broadly speaking the m5 is with many use cases a noticeable difference compared to the m3, but the bump from m5 to m7 less so, and with the m7 there might be more heat and throttling.

As mentioned before in this topic, these are the expected CPUs in the new model:

Repeating others probably but what we can most likely expect are:
  • Kaby Lake m3, Yi5, Yi7 processor options
  • 16GB RAM option
  • New wide gamut display
  • Faster SSD with 1TB option
  • 2nd generation butterfly keyboard
  • Slightly improved battery life claims
  • Base model price reduction

Here are some more spec comparisons:

Can we assume the same is/will be true here, in that the Yi5 is your best bet?

Any idea how soon these things are usually available after a "silent" release? I can return mine until 3/30. Honestly don't really want to do that again (had some problems with mine; see other threads) but...

IIRC you can order right away. Shipping dates will depend on the product, popularity, etc, but if you're quick it should be the regular shipping time for the product in question. It's mostly with keynotes that they announce something with pre-orders starting the following Friday.

I like the way the m3 and i5 are the same price. I'm guessing this won't be passed on to the customer...

You don't think April, like every other year so far? I wouldn't put it past Apple to take the store down again in a couple of weeks.
I see. I haven't tracked macbook releases closely. You're right. April 19th was last year's release.

I was confused by the rapid beta releases for sierra leading up to today.

So another month then?

Apple did a silent release of the MB last year separate from the SE/iPad/Watch band keynote. I see no reason that there won't be a silent MB update separate from this silent update of similar products again this year. The releases were a month apart.

An April event is not out, i think now the event will be more important since no ipad pro got an update, 12" Macbook still no update. I hope to see the invites by Friday for April 4

It appears that way, unless they do the April 4th event that many have been speculating... But even that may just be for new iPads and not the Macbook.

Came here to say the opposite of this - thought since it wasn't included yesterday we may be seeing a bigger update. Didn't realize this is how it went last year too... Crap, man.

EDIT: Nevermind, it wasn't two silent updates last year. My point stands, although I agree there isn't necessarily a reason we wouldn't see two silent updates one after another besides the precedent... Here's to hoping for a larger update.
