My Apple Watch SE's face cracked and I'm going to file a claim through the insurance (Asurion?) with AT&T. Anything I should expect or watch out for?

I usually have AppleCare so this is the first time filing a claim since my Palm Trēo 700p.

Do I need to pay the deductible now or would it just be added onto my bill? Are the replacement devices pretty reliable?

I didn't think about adding AppleCare until it was too late. I was able to add insurance through AT&T when they had an open enrollment a couple of months ago.

I just checked the prices again. I thought the repairs were closer to the full retail price. Repair at Apple is $250, full new SE is $360. I think I saw the Asurion insurance deductible is $125.

My plan was to get this repaired/replaced and trading it in for the Apple Watch 8.

If I can get AppleCare on the replacement one from Apple, I think I may do that. It's $2.50/month compared to AT&T's $14.

And after verifying all the prices, I'm really considering just getting it replaced at Apple to get a genuine watch with no issues. I need to double check that I can add AppleCare to it.

Kind of. Once I get this repaired, I won’t be able to add AppleCare to it.

Either way, not adding AppleCare at the beginning seems like an expensive mistake.

It's relative. I for one have an S4 that I never bought AppleCare and to date it has never needed servicing. I saved cash for a service I actually never needed.

True. I have an S0 that lasted years before the battery needed to be service. Even then, I think that was $50.
