I'm using a MacMini 1.8GHZ, 1 GB RAM, to try and play back a 1080p WMV using VLC player (I also have Flip4Mac installed). I keep getting errors that it's dropping frames and there's no sound.

Is this an issue with not having enough CPU? Is is it a driver/player issue?

Has anyone been able to play back a 1080p WMV on their mac mini fine?

Fire up VMware Fusion, and use Windows w/ MPlayer or WMP.

It's almost a joke as to how far ahead the Windows decoders are ahead of the Mac OS X decoders.

WMV HD only has a chance on the Mac Mini if you're running Windows on Boot Camp - don't bother trying with VMWare/Parallels.

Your best bet (on the Mac side) would be to try the file with QuickTime and the latest beta (2.2.039) version of Flip4Mac. VLC does not use Flip4Mac for decoding.

I'll download a 1080p sample file later, but 720p WMV files play fine in QuickTime (on a MacBook).

WMV is just a container. What's the file encoded as? Windows Media Video 9 Advanced? Standard?
