I feel like being an early adopter to a new technology almost requires you to be a salesperson for that product. Has anybody thought of how they are going to "sell" the Apple Watch to friends/coworkers, when they inevitably judge you for spending $700 on an Apple Watch? I'm looking for a "script" here of key talking points to make my purchase look normal... Haha

No. It doesn't. Apple isn't paying you. You paid them for a product. You should use it and enjoy it.

I don't care what people think about how I spend my money. When they start buying my stuff for me, I'll start giving a damn what they think. ;)

You can use my script. Me=me and F/C = Friend of co-worker:

F/C: Hey are you going to get the Apple watch?

Me: Yep

F/C: From what I've heard and read the things you can do with it I can already do on my phone so why would I want one?

Me: Do you own a bluetooth headset for your phone?

F/C: yeah why?

Me: Why would you buy one when you can hold your phone up to your face and talk?

F/C: It's more convenient

Me: Same applies to the Apple watch. It's more convenient to quickly view notifications on your wrist than it is to reach for your pocket every now and then to check. A study has shown that the average person reaches for their smartphone at least 5 times in 2 minutes. It's also more convenient to complete simply daily tasks from your wrist.

the conversation can go in all directions from here.

I guess the workplace can be a problem. If you feel your going to experience stress, perhaps just keep it in your pocket until you feel things out and somebody else is guinea pig. This way you can play with it, etc.

Also, this way you can show it off and see how people react. You can say you got it as a gift, or some such, and are considering return it; like your noncommittal, blasé.

note: I actually think about this stuff :D

Smartphone watches have not been popular up to now but you know once Apple releases one it will be the must have.

When this nosy bossy neighbor and leader of the mom clique in my former neighborhood sauntered over to my garden one day to give me crap about my decision to NOT put my toddler into her preschool I just smiled and shrugged and waved vaguely while pulling the weeds in my garden. Then I repeated those gestures in various combinations in response to her rants until her head exploded in a puff of feathers. Really, just shrug and wave vaguely and repeat. People will just use your words against you so don't give them any to work with. If you feel compelled to say anything, simply repeat that you like it and you're happy. And keep smiling and shrugging.

Hate to say but 99% of the people you encounter during the day will not even notice. The 1% that does will say little or nothing.

This watch is not going to be life changing even though many here think so.

Unless you are talking to a monk... judge their clothes back. It's always wrong.

Or their physical form.

Or the fact they don't wear a watch, and need to go to their phones every time they want to check time.

Or even better, you can say they are poor, drowned in debts, or communist.

If that doesn't work, you can say that they are buying one, but only after everybody has one, so they appear "normal", and you find that boring.

You don't have to justify it. It reminds me of the first iPad. There were people who wanted to question my decision to buy one on release, and I did try to justify it with legitimate "excuses". Ultimately though, I simply wanted one and soon stopped feeling the need to justify how I spent my money.

Same with the Watch. Sure it's convenient being able to quickly look at your wrist instead of pulling out a smartphone for trivial things. Sure the materials used for the standard Watch and certain band combinations somewhat help justify the price.

There will however, be some that will pick apart your reasons regardless because it gives them an excuse to sneer. That is there problem. Not yours.

I don't agree with this assessment at all.

Think about how you feel about bringing in leftover Chinese food for lunch. Are you all worried what people will think of you? 'Gosh, he's cheap!' 'I heard Chinese food shouldn't be kept in the fridge overnight - it spoils' 'Look at all those calories!' 'That food smells!'

No... you shouldn't have those feelings. You should just enjoy the food, and that's just what you do as part of your life. There is no reason to 'defend' yourself. on this choice.

If you have the feeling that the Apple Watch is the right purchase for you, there is no reason to be 'defensive'. Your opinion should be that you are proud of it.

If someone sarcastically asks you 'How do you like that Apple Watch?'. Just shrug and say you love it. If someone then says 'What a waste of money!', just shrug and say 'I think it's worth it'

Don't bite and get mad or get really defensive because all they want to do is pick on someone for something. If they don't get the rise from you they want, they'll move on to someone else and pick on them for their shoes, hair style, clothes, something else.

Nothing you say to those people will change their opinion of anything - they just want to find a reason to pick on people. I've dealt with people like these all my life.

Only entertain people who actually are curious and want to learn about the Apple Watch and what it does.

You shouldn't have to justify anything, but, it can be fun to try. I like to think of the AW like this...

if at any point they are trying to criticize this decision...? Maybe they need to screw off and mine their own damned business.

Best comment I've seen yet!

I don't question others about their choices, and don't expect it from them. I'm buying a 42mm grey, just because!

Yeah. I bought the first iPhone and the first iPad. I didn't ask anyone what they thought and I didn't care. I just bought them and enjoyed them. People noticed my iPhone (usually kept the iPad at home) and would ask if I liked it, why I bought it, etc.

My response? Yes, I like it. I like new gadgets and I like Apple.

That satisfies most people. After a good many years with the same company, this became well-known fact. People have asked me which iPhone model they should buy, what I think of the new iPad, whether to buy a MBP or a MB Air, etc. When the watches were announced, plenty of people asked me which one I was going to buy. They didn't even ask IF I was buying. They asked WHICH ONE.

As I said earlier, I don't care what they think of my purchases. I guess that's why I never even stop to consider what someone may say if they see me wearing one. Because I do not care.

:D

Huh? are we talking about a watch or a dirty magazine? It your right to be who you are, never hide it. At work, home or anywhere you may be. you do know the definition of stress don't you?
" stress is the mind over riding the body's natural desire to hurt someone who deserves it "

Seriously! it is not about others, It is about you. If you give into others then you will sooner or later loose yourself in their beliefs;)

99% of the time no one notices the phone I'm using either.

Hahahaha! That's exactly what I imagined. Why buy a watch that only works while you wear it and hide it in your pocket?

This is so funny. I have never had anyone in my life be judgmental on my gadgets and I have had a LOT of them over the years. However, the double edged sword of this is many of my friends assume I know everything about every gadget.
