I am planning on upgrading my unibody macbook's stock 160gb harddrive with a large 7200 rpm harddrive. Are there any brands that are more compatible with macbooks? and is a 7200 rpm hdd much louder then a 5400?

Any 2.5" S-ATA HDD with a height of 9.5mm or 12.5mm will fit.

And yes, a 7200RPM HDD is louder (not by much) than a 5400RPM HDD due to 1800 more RPM.

Most recommended brands are Seagate, Western Digital or Hitachi.

MRoogle will find you hundreds of already existing threads about updating the internal HDD on Apple's notebook computers.
