The most obvious challenge I see with multiple ports and hubs and docks is that there's only one 5 Gbps lane to work with; that severely limits the variety of dongles and hubs and docks we'll see.

This thing is meant for wireless, even if it's sometimes unrealistic or unreliable.

Small travel dock / mini-hub. I am thinking something like current Apple USB-C charger, but with added USB-C hub functionality. 3 ports would do for me. The idea being that I can charge my rMB, and still connect to 2 additional peripherals.

Yes! I'd also really like to see USB-C accessories integrated into a charger. For me, it'd be: (1) HDMI, (2) regular USB, and (3) USB-C. Until somebody makes one, I may just tape the USB-C AV Multiport Adapter onto the Apple charger.:D

Basically I just want USB memory, HDMI (it better carry audio as well) and that's about it..

The only problem with this is that it uses up the one port, and then you're done. So, ultimately you still need a dongle to provide more ports.

Currently that means the HDMI/VGA dongle, but I guess a 3rd party dongle with multiple USB-C ports might come out, which would be more versatile, and then that USB-C - DP cable would be a good option.

More generally, in terms of other USB-connected peripherals, I would hope that a simple USB-A to USB-C cable would mean I don't have to buy new devices.

For "desktop use" though, I guess the obvious new device is a monitor that connects to the laptop via USB-C and provides display, power, and a USB hub.

Annoyingly I just bought a new monitor, but I imagine that its standard USB3.0 doesn't provide enough power, so even a USB-A to USB-C cable is not going to power the rMB. For now a dongle it will have to be...

I want one, but having to daisy-chain dongles is ridiculous. I like everything else about the machine, apart from just having the one port, obviously. Who could be happy with that?

It probably depends on how often you think you'd need it. For a once a day TM backup when I get home, no problem. If I had to carry the dongle and/or a couple of adapters around every day, it would probably defeat some of the ostensible appeal of this machine.
