I am about to pull the trigger and get a 128gb 6th generation because I have given up on Apple releasing a 7th generation. I badly need to replace my 4th generation because the battery is shot and I now need a portable music player, when before it didn't matter because I was just playing it in the car with it plugged in.

What version of iOS does the 6th generation support? How long before the touch is obselete?

Is there a good affordable 256gb alternative to the touch? I would like to be able to put my whole music collection on the device uncompressed if possible.

Thanks.

It will still support iOS 12 when that's released.

It currently supports iOS 11 and will support iOS 12 (when released, it's currently in beta) for certain. Since all the A7 iOS devices are also getting iOS 12 and the iPod Touch 6th gen has an A8 there is a decent chance that it will get iOS 13 as well so at a minimum it will get roughly 18 months of being on the latest version of iOS and possibly 30 months. That said if it's really just for music being on the latest iOS probably isn't that important.

Not really sure of any other decent alternatives. A cheap Android phone with an SD card reader might work but might be some work to setup.

How much is a battery replacement?
