I may be getting ahead of myself here but does anyone know if the Pro Max and Mini will be shipping with iOS 14.1 preinstalled or will it be 14.2?? I saw where 14.2 is now released but wasn't sure if I should go ahead and install the update on my current phone ahead of receiving my new phone next week.

go ahead and install 14.2 worst case you just have to update your 12 pro max to 14.2 before you restore the backup

It really doesn’t matter, if it needs updating when you get it, just update it.
Sorry, I need things dumbed down. So if I was looking to do the wireless transfer and my old phone is on 14.2 ~ I turn the new phone on set up as new phone first and update to 14.2 and then reset to start process over?

yes you update the new phone to 14.2 first

Now thinking there will be some in-depth reviews dropping next week that will specify. Either way, I can live with 14.1 for another week. Thanks everyone!!!

That's just a pain. I wish Apple announced what version it is they're shipping it with, so that we know whether to apply the update. The transfer process is only seamless when both phones are on the same version. Would be nice if someone who got their hands on one of those review models could confirm what version it is running.

I have seen a few but none of them has mentioned what version of iOS the phone shipped with. Seems like a big oversight on the reviewers' part.

Pre-ordered iPhone 12 Pro Max which is arriving on Friday. Not using iCloud so need to restore from an iTunes backup and I believe iOS versions need to be the same on old phone and new phone for that to work.

Is the Max on iOS 14.1 or iOS 14.2?

It currently ships with 14.1. There was a video posted where it arrived on 14.1 and asked for an update after setting it up.

They don’t need to be on the same version to restore, but you can only restore from an older version to a newer version. So if your old phone is on 14.1 and the new phone comes with 14.2 you‘ll be fine because you can restore the older 14.1 backup to the newer 14.2.

However if you are on 14.2 and the new phone comes with 14.1 then you won’t be able to restore until you upgrade the new phone to 14.2.

The safest option is to just stay on 14.1 and then you’ll be able to restore no matter what. But frankly, upgrading the new phone to 14.2, then restoring isn't really that difficult, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

They changed the way restoring works. If you try to restore 14.2 to a new iPhone 12 running 14.1 it will update to 14.2 first and then restore the backup. You will be fine to update to 14.2 now.

It does that if you’re restoring from iCloud, but I don’t believe it will with an iTunes restore, like the OP said he was doing.

Agreed with @that be me , 14.1 from the videos I've seen. Why not update just update the new phone to the most current version before switching your stuff? It won't take long.

I just talked to a friend who got the Review Samples from Apple today (iPhone 12 Pro Max and Mini). Both have 14.1 preinstalled still. But during Setup Process when you use your Backup it will automatically update. So don`t worry.

What if you’re transferring data from phone to phone?
