Why didnt you just install server on your G5?

My G5 is not a server. I use it as my "normal" Mac, and running Leopard server is a bit expensive...
My Xserve OTOH is my in-house testing-and-having-fun server. This one does do server stuff, so installing the server verison is required. It's really cool!

Does server run any differently to standard? surely normal usage is the same only with better networking and maintenance options.

No, it hardly runs differently. Sometimes apps like Photobooth may not work, but usually apps that work on the client version also run on the server version.

Mac OS X Server doesn't have better networking options, but has more options. Many services are available on the client too (like DHCP server), but are far more difficult or almost impossible to manage. Same goes for DNS server etc.
 
Should have had the option to list multiple poll answers. I have the upgrade from Tiger and the 5 user pack.
