I've been thoroughly confused by the different versions of OpenOffice. These are the 3 I can discern.
1) OpenOffice with X11. Apparently it treats Mac OS just like Unix and is the least popular.
2) OpenOffice in Aqua. I guess this is the OpenOffice people actually trying on Mac OS.
3) NeoOffice. A non-affiliated port of OpenOffice to Mac OS in Aqua using Java.

I already have Microsoft Office installed on my Windows partition that I can virtualize, but that doesn't seem feasible.

So which version of Office is the best to use? I'm hoping that whichever one will be good enough that I won't need to buy Microsoft Office for Mac, but in the meantime, I hope to pick up the best version to run.

NeoOffice, for now. OpenOffice with X11 might be ahead of NeoOffice in development, but probably not by much. Neo is just an Aqua port of OpenOffice (far as I know, anyway). Open Office in Aqua (which will eventually render NeoOffice unnecessary) is in Alpha right now and very much not ready for regular use. Another year or so and that will be the one to use.

Some people might prefer OpenOffice with X11, but I don't like having to launch X11 in addition to OO.
