I must be stupid or something, but Windows 7 is version 7. Duh.

It's not the 7th iteration of windows, it's not the 7th update, it's not the 7th name, but it's in the ***** name.

The poll didn't ask about the technical naming, it asked for the version. Windows XP is the XP version. Windows 2000 is the 2000 version.

:)

The OP asked for the version number, not the name. Windows 7 is the name, as Windows XP and Windows Me and Windows Vista are only names, not numbers. The same can be said for Windows 95, 98, 2000 and the other one that had a name instead of a version number or a number.
Windows 7 is the first Windows since Windows 3.5 to use some kind of version numbering again, but that is external. 6.1 is the correct number.

note: DO NOT LOOK THIS UP! vote based purely on your knowledge.

also posters may see the answer below, so dont read the posts before you vote ;)

i am curious. do you know the version number of Microsoft's latest OS? bonus points to the current dot version number. i am thinking that Mac users have a fair sense of their 'evil' companion.

Nice try, but... no.

It's the 7th major version of Windows NT, so Windows 7 is fine.

Snow Leopard is not the 6th release of Mac OS - it's the 6th release of Mac OS X.

Windows NT 3.1
Windows NT 3.5
Windows NT 4
Windows NT 5 (Windows 2000)
Windows NT 5.1 (XP)
Windows NT 6 (Vista)
Windows NT 7 (Seven)

If you go by that logic and exclude all the server versions, which played some role in Vista and especially Windows 7, you can explain it.

Hello richthomas,

If you would like to compare the different Windows 7 Versions go here:

thanks again,

Microsoft Windows Client Team

im not sure if you are actually on the Microsoft Windows Client Team, but if you are thanks! but that link just compares the features of XP, Vista and 7. although im now thinking this post is spam.

and it looks like the poll as attained a nice distribution of results. option 10 received more votes than 8 which i predicted, but 6 received more votes than 7 so we know our windows.

  1. Windows 1.0
  2. Windows 2.0
  3. Windows 3.0/3.1
  4. Windows NT
  5. Windows 95
  6. Windows NT 4.0
  7. Windows NT 5.0 (although it was never released)
  8. Windows 98
  9. Windows 98SE
  10. Windows 2000
  11. Windows ME
  12. Windows XP
  13. Windows Server 2003
  14. Windows CE
  15. Windows Vista
  16. Windows Server 2008
  17. Windows 7

That looks like a whopping 17 to me.
